Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

On Haws' ankle:

"Pretty impressive. There are a lot of guys that are competitive and have a real grit to their game, but to be able to overcome the challenge that he had from last Saturday night to get his ankle in a situation where he can move around on it with full weight-bearing yesterday, and today he passed all protocol with a sprained ankle recovery, but he hadn't practiced. He was determined. He said, 'Coach, I'm going to warm up and if it feels alright after the first four minute time out, we will evaluate it.' I think he came into that first timeout with six points or so. He wanted to help. That's what he said. He told me he just wanted to help. He sure enough did. I'm happy for him. I'm happy for all of the guys. The week is a pretty strenuous, taxing week with finals and changing our practice schedule and our routine. I thought the guys played really well, competed really well. The end of the game wasn't our best executing down the stretch, but we made enough plays to win."

Resume win:

"The Stanford win last year became huge for us late. We don't really know going into a preseason schedule which teams are going to take off and be big. The Texas win last year was big and we didn't know that at the time. And the fact that we've come close in a couple others, this was really important for us. It was really important for us to win a close game against a really good team. This is a really good team with those three fifth-year seniors."

Execution:

"This week we have four really big games, obviously. UMass will come in here on Tuesday then we have a nationally-ranked team in Gonzaga then Portland, one of the better teams in our league in the preseason. Hopefully we can manage it. We'll see how Ty feels on Monday then we'll prepare for a good scoring UMass team. I look forward to it."

Bigs:

"I think Isaac, Dalton, Luke and Corbin, those are kind of the four guys that every game we're going to have to have them step up and be comfortable out there. I think we found a niche with a four guard offense, but we can't play that all the time. That can't be more than a situational type of thing. I think all of them are improving. I think Luke was really good tonight; he hit a couple of big free throws. I think we did a nice job making it hard for their big guy."

On Winder's play:

"We went through a stretch there where he got a big defensive rebound and raced it up into a basket and then he had two steals where he knocked it off his leg and it was ours then he knocked it out and we got it. I think we converted points on all three and we needed all of those. At the time I think we got up 11 then maybe 13, but then they pressured us late. I think a lot of it had to do with that execution late. Ty is our guy in all of those situations, but he wasn't himself. He couldn't plant as quick and wasn't as aggressive to the ball. But we can work on that. Hopefully it doesn't become a pattern. Hopefully we can finish these games off better."

Rotation:

"We were on a path, and then we had a couple things go wrong with Nate and some other injuries. I think we have a pretty good idea as a staff what direction we want to go in. Hopefully these guys will step up and be consistent. We have a lot of experience, but we have some inexperienced guys that we are really counting on. What we need is continued improvement so that we can rely on consistency from those guys. â€‹

On ankle injury:

"I hit therapy really hard, iced it, stayed off it for a few days and I didn't know if I was going to go tonight, but I got into warm-ups and I felt good. I'm just really proud of our guys for the way we battled. We have to keep learning to finish games the right way, but a win's a win. We'll take it."

"It's a little sore, but I think it'll continue to get better and stronger. It would tighten up a little bit, but I think that was expected."

Down the stretch:

"They hit some shots. We have to take care of the ball and learn how to control the game a little better. I don't think we're that far off from doing that and we're going to address those things and get better."

Kyle Collinsworth

On health:

"It felt really good today. It's the best it has felt. I was more explosive and I looked like my old self. I was happy with that, but it was tough this week for our team with finals. We took a few days off, but that was an advantage for my knee."

On fan support:

"I felt like for the situation, our crowd was really good tonight. Our team knows how important it was and we had urgency from the start and made plays for each other. It was awesome." â€‹

Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins

"I was proud of them for the way we fought. That's who we are. Our guys are going to fight for 40 minutes. I was just proud of them for that effort."

"I thought we had a sense of urgency. I thought that we really picked it up defensively. We sped them up a little bit. I thought it was effective for us down the stretch. I thought Robert did a good job of helping do that for us with his energy and his effort. But all of our guys, I thought we made a lot of good plays which led to transition and trying to extend the game."

"They're a very good team, and they score the ball, so we knew that we were going to have to play at a tempo that would be good for us. Especially here, they just shoot the ball so well. They're going to get on runs, and you have to withstand it. I thought in both halves we were able to withstand the runs. We made a lot of substitutions, so we kept guys fairly fresh, which I think allowed us to also have energy toward the end of this game to make plays."

"The offensive rebounds surprised me. They had 15 offensive rebounds, which was worth 25 points. That's the ball game. That and points off turnovers. Twenty-two points off turnovers as well as 25 points off offensive rebounds."
