Player Notes

Haws finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal. He passed the 2,200-point mark, making him the third fastest to reach 2,200 in BYU history doing so in 115 games. Only Danny Ainge and Devin Durrant reached 2,200 points quicker. Haws also passed Terrell Lowery for 4th on the West Coast Conference's overall games scoring list.

His double figure scoring game was the 99th of his career and 59th straight. It was also his fifth straight game with 4 or more rebounds.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth finished with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. His steal moved him into 13th place on the BYU career steals list with 119.

Chase Fischer

Fischer scored 13 points, all four of his field goals were from behind the 3-point line. He added 4 assists.

Luke Worthington

Worthington started and played 18 minutes as he scored 2 points, grabbed a rebound and a steal.

Isaac Neilson

Neilson started for the second time this season and scored a career-high 15 points on four 3-pointers. He added 6 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist.

Anson Winder

Winder finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Team Notes

This was the first game of the season without Nate Austin in the starting five. Collinsworth, Fischer, Haws, Neilson, Worthington started as a group for the first time this season.

BYU's 39-25 halftime lead was its largest against a D-I opponent this season.

The Cougars now own a four-game road win streak.

BYU head coach Dave Rose is now 31-8 against in-state opponents. The Cougars are now 2-1 this season against other Utah teams.

Haws, Neilson and Fischer scored in double figures, while Haws led the team with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

BYU shot above 60 percent from the 3-point line for the first time since the game against Santa Clara on Jan. 18 of last season.

Runs

The Cougars started on a 5-0 run and kept the Weber State crowd, who stands until the Wildcats score points, on its feet for 2:14 thanks to a steal and two points from Haws and a 3-pointer from Fischer.

BYU extended its early lead to 14-points with a 15-4 run, which included a 10-0 run. Neilson and Fischer hit 3-pointers, while Haws added four free throws. After Weber State added a bucket Neilson hit another three and Halford hit a jumper to make it 20-6 with 14 minutes left in the first half.

In the second half, the Cougars used a 6-0 run to stretch its lead back to 16 with a Fischer 3-pointer and an old-fashioned three-point play from Haws. The run gave BYU a 63-47 lead with 6:40 left in the game.

Another late 6-0 run gave BYU its largest lead of the game of 20. Haws, Winder and Nixon each scored two points as the Cougars led 70-50 with four minutes left.

BYU head coach Dave Rose

“The biggest emotion here now for our team is that we’re pleased for our guys. This is a really difficult thing to do, especially when the game the other night was so much not like us. You try to find yourself and what you do well and how you do it on someone else’s floor. That’s a difficult challenge. All those kinds of things put together, I think the result was something our guys can really hang their hat on.”

On control of the game:

“There were a couple runs they made and we didn’t get what we really wanted offensively and it turned into a run. They cut it to eight or nine a couple times. The best thing tonight was that it was a really good team win. There were so many guys who were able to play a few more minutes. There was a lot of real balance from our team with scoring and rebounding the ball. We got contributions from seven, eight, nine or 10 guys on both ends of the floor.”

On Tyler Haws:

“You can’t help but be impressed with his effort tonight with his first rebound, to pushing the ball in transition and to coming off screens. He wanted to lead his team tonight to make sure we got back on the right track and he did a great job of that. He came down on a guy’s foot late in the game and it’s really painful. We’re hoping it’s a sprain and we’ll get that checked out and find out and see how he can recover from that. We’ll probably have an MRI and we’ll be really cautious with this because ankles have not been good to us, so hopefully we can catch a break here.”

Isaac Neilson

On 3-pointers:

“This whole week I’ve been thinking about relaxing and playing my game and having fun. When I hit my first three, I was able to find a rhythm and knock down the other threes when the guys were able to find me in an open spot.”

On double-digit lead throughout the game:

“We really focused on urgency in this game and we found that as we were urgent, our shots would fall and we would be able to play defense a lot better, rebound and keep or extend our lead. That worked really well for us and we just had fun.”

On importance of 3-pointers:

“We know we can hit those shots and we have confidence that they’re going to go in. We know that once we get in the rhythm, things are going to flow and we know that we can get our offense going. There have been a couple games where we’ve been missing them, but we’ve been able to calm down and shoot the ball, and stick with other teams or pull out victories.”
