BYU vs. Purdue Box Score

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Tyler Haws scored a season-high 32 points as BYU lost in overtime to Purdue 87-85 to take sixth place in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Wednesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

"It was a good college basketball game," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "I think both teams fought really hard. It was  interesting how the game went in stretches for each team. I think both battled really hard. They made a couple big plays down the stretch, especially on the offensive end, rebounding the ball. We got a miss and didn't secure the defensive rebound.

"But we made some really big plays on the other end. I think our guys left it out there. We just didn't have enough to get the win. The most important thing for us is when you look forward, is the fact that these are three days where we learned a lot about ourselves. I think we got better as a team and hopefully that will help us down the stretch."

Haws added season highs with five rebounds and three blocks, while Anson Winder contributed 18 points, going 7 of 9 from the field and 3 of 3 from deep. Kyle Collinsworth added nine points, eight assists and a career-high six steals with Nate Austin grabbing a team-high six rebounds.

Haws opened the game with a 3-pointer for the first points and a 3-0 start against the Boilermakers. The Cougars got out to a 7-4 start before Purdue took a quick 9-8 lead with under 15 minutes left in the half. Haws’ assist to Collinsworth led to a two-hand dunk on the break, which was followed by a Winder 3-pointer at the 12:44 mark as the Cougars retook the lead at 15-11.

Purdue went on an 11-0 run to jump out to a 22-15 lead before a pair of free throws by Austin ended the run and pulled BYU back within five. Haws recorded two blocks and a jumper in two minutes, but BYU trailed 29-21 before Collinsworth’s steal and assist to Winder for a layup brought BYU within six points at the 4:25 mark.

Winder and Haws scored the last 12 BYU points to enter halftime down 40-35. Haws led the team with 12 points with Winder following with 10 points at the break. Collinsworth dished out six assists, while Austin pulled down four rebounds to go along with six points.

BYU chipped away at Purdue’s lead with buckets coming from Collinsworth, Haws and Chase Fischer. Three minutes into the second half, Fischer connected on his first field goal of the game from deep to bring the Cougars within two points at 45-43. Fischer’s second 3-pointer at the 15:32 mark gave BYU its first lead since the first half as the Cougars went up 48-47. Collinsworth capped the BYU's 7-0 run with a steal and a dunk on the break to extend the lead to three with 15:07 left.

The Boilermakers rallied to take a four-point lead until Winder’s shot from beyond the arc brought the Cougars within one, 62-61, with 8:55 remaining. After falling behind by three, freshman Dalton Nixon connected on a 3-pointer to tie it up at 66 with Haws’ jumper giving BYU a 71-69 lead with 4:43 left in the game.

Both teams got into a back-and-forth battle with Haws’ off-balance jumper putting BYU up 79-76. Purdue tied it up at 81 but the Cougars had the last possession with 23 seconds remaining. Haws’ baseline jumper came up short and the game went to overtime.

Purdue scored the first four points in overtime before Corbin Kaufusi’s putback kept BYU within two with 2:02 remaining. Collinsworth’s trip to the charity stripe tied it at 85-85 with 14 seconds remaining, but Purdue scored a bucket with one second to go to take the game, 87-85.

The Cougars return to the Marriott Center to host Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
