Team Notes

The Cougars started Fischer, Halford, Haws, Austin and Worthington as a unit for the first time this season.

Seven Cougars scored in double figures (Toolson, Neilson, Haws, Worthington, Fischer, Winder and Nixon) while no one recorded double figure rebounds.

The win gave BYU a 14-game home win streak and a 5-game non-conference home win streak.

It was the third straight game where the Cougars scored 90+ points, equaling the longest streak of last season and it is the first time BYU started a season with three games of scoring 90 or more since 1978-79.

The winning margin of 53 is the most since 2010 when the Cougars beat Mississippi Valley State 86-36 and the fifth largest in BYU history since 1950.

The 19 steals by the Cougars is a team singel-game record.

Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

“It was a scrappy game. A positive thing for us is we got to play a lot of guys a lot of minutes. As you try to put your rotation together, we learn a lot from how guys played in this game which is a good thing. For the most part we stayed within what we wanted to do. There were a couple times where we got a little ragged, but defensively we stayed within our system. Offensively, we shared the ball.”

On the play of new guys:

"I liked the fact that we got to play some of the guys who have shown what they can do in practice really well, but haven’t been able to play in a game situation. They got extended minutes tonight and I think that alone will help us down the road."

On Jake Toolson’s play:

"Jake actually got the most minutes tonight and he made great use of those minutes. He was the only who hit a three for us but I really like the other parts of his game. His floor game in general. Defensively, he is learning our system a little better. He rebounded the ball, assisted the ball, shot the ball. The only way you can gain confidence in your ability to play is to get out there and be successful so tonight was good for him."

On Frank Bartley’s play at point guard:

"I thought Frank was really under control at that position. Frank has got some real talent at that point guard position. He needs to play within himself and within what we do and I thought tonight he did a really good job of that. He looked really good on the floor and I hope that helps with our depth at that position."

On Kyle Collinsworth not playing:

"This was the plan. When he came back from the doctor about two weeks ago, they said he could play in that exhibition game. This is how they set it up that he wouldn’t play this back-to-back. He’s set for practice Friday in Maui. We’ll treat it like it never happened and just let him go."

On playing San Diego State:

"I can tell you right now that the key to this game will be to rebound. If we can rebound missed shots we will have the chance to stay in the game."

Tyler Haws

On tonight’s game:

“We wanted to play our game, play the right way offensively and defensively. We had spurts where we were right. It is about getting better every single game and I think we got better tonight.”

On Jake Toolson’s game:

“He’s great. The whole place wanted him to shoot that last three. When he’s confident catching and shooting he’s one of the best shooters on our team. Everyone has a lot of confidence in him and he is going to have a lot more big games for us this year.”

On playing San Diego State:

"I’m excited. They always have really, really good athletes. I think their style really fits our style. They want to push the ball and it’s always an up-tempo game and we like that challenge. We like when teams want to do that. Hopefully we get our minds right and our bodies right the next few days so we are ready to go."

On the significance of the Maui Invitational for the program:

"We are happy to be a part of it but we want to win games too. We know the challenge ahead of us and we think we can compete with anyone so we have been looking forward to it and building up to this point. I think we are ready to go."

Jake Toolson

On what this game means early in his career:

"I knew that coming in I would get some more minutes and hopefully just get some reps and build my confidence. Coming in I was just trying to stay ready and help this team win. I’m just glad we got the win."

On what Coach Rose thought of him taking that last three:

"He didn’t say anything. He seemed pleased. He’s just happy we won, but coach Pope came up to me and told me I was a dork."

Southern Virginia head coach Tony Caputo

On BYU's inside game:

"Inside, they just took it to us. They're just so big and strong and just scored at will, especially as the game went on."

On BYU's balanced effort:

"They've got everything you want as a team. They've got speed and size. They've got great 3-point and free throw shooters. They play hard defensively. They really scored in every way and were hard to hang with."

On playing in the Marriott Center:

"We play in an arena that seats about 500 people, so it's amazing. It's an incredible experience for our team to play in a place like this. Now that we've played here, we really can't face anything in our league that can faze us. Any place we go to, any team we take on is not going to match this."
