Calvert, Emery, Hartsock and Shaw to play in 2015-16

PROVO, Utah – BYU coach Dave Rose announced today that Cory Calvert, Nick Emery, Jakob Hartsock and Braiden Shaw will return from two-year missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2015 and play for BYU beginning in the 2015-16 season.

Rose also announced today the signing of high school senior Zac Seljaas to a National Letter of Intent.

Calvert is currently serving his two-year mission in Boston. He played his freshman year at BYU in 2012-13, helping the Cougars to a 24-12 record and a trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. He posted season highs of 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. The 6-foot-3 guard prepped at Chaparral High School in Colorado. He was the 5A player of the year as a senior while leading Chaparral to the state title.

Emery, Hartsock and Shaw were part of the class of 2013 that originally signed with BYU in November 2012. They left on their LDS missions following high school.

Emery enjoyed one of the most decorated high school careers in Utah history. He was named Mr. Basketball his senior year and was the 5A MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior. Emery scored 1,953 career points and hit 269 threes while leading Lone Peak to three-straight 5A state titles. Ranked No. 14 among point guards in the class of 2013 by ESPN.com, Emery is currently serving in Germany. His older brother Jackson helped lead the Cougars to the Sweet 16 in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and is BYU’s all-time steals leader.

Hartsock prepped at Bartlesville High School in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. As a senior he averaged 18.6 points while leading Bartlesville to a 16-7 record and the Class 6A area playoffs. Hartsock was selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large East Boys Basketball Team and was ranked 56th among power forwards nationally by ESPN.com. Hartsock is currently serving in Las Vegas. His older brother Noah played at BYU and earned All-West Coast Conference First Team honors as a senior in 2011-12.

Shaw played his high school basketball at Eagle High School in Eagle, Idaho. ESPN.com named Shaw the top recruit in Idaho in the class of 2013. The Idaho Statesman named Shaw second-team 5A All-Southern Idaho his senior year and second-team all-state his junior year. Shaw is currently serving his mission in Sacramento, California.

Cory Calvert

  • Played in 28 games as a freshman at BYU in 2012-13
  • Scored in double figures once against Eastern New Mexico with 10 points while hitting 2 for 2 from the 3-point line
  • Scored 9 points at Weber State on 3 of 4 shooting from the field
  • Posted season highs of 10 points (ENMU), 4 rebounds (vs. Washington), 3 assists (vs. Washington) and 1 steal (5 times)
  • Averaged 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists and shot .317 from the field
  • Prior to BYU prepped at Chaparral High School for Rob Johnson
  • Named the 2012 5A MVP in Colorado by the Denver Post and MaxPreps.com
  • Named first-team all-state, Continental League Player of the Year and the Joint Effort Co-Player of the Year
  • Led Chaparral to the 2012 5A state title and a 25-3 record while averaging 22.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists
  • As a junior averaged 15.8 points, 4.8 boards and 3.9 assists and earned first-team All-Continental League and honorable mention all-state honors
  • As a sophomore averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists and was named second-team all-league

Nick Emery

6-2, 180, G, Lone Peak

  • A four-year starter for Quincy Lewis at Lone Peak High School
  • Career totals of 1,953 points (first all-time at Lone Peak) and 269 threes and averages of 19.9 points and 2.7 threes per game
  • Career highs of 39 points, 8 threes, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 8 steals
  • As a senior, helped lead Lone Peak to 26-1 record, the 2012-13 MaxPreps.com National Title and the 5A Utah state title
  • Averaged 17.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.9 steals as a senior
  • Named a third-team All-American by MaxPreps.com
  • Named the 2012-13 Mr. Basketball by the Deseret News, the 5A MVP by the Salt Lake Tribune, the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year and the Valley Player of the Year by the Daily Herald
  • As a junior averaged 21.6 points, 3.4 threes, 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals and led Lone Peak to a 22-3 record, the 5A state title and a No. 24 national ranking (Maxpreps.com)

  • As a junior averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game while shooting .496 from the field, .366 from three and .780 from the free throw line

Braiden Shaw
