Six Cougars earn WCC academic awards

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – With the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year, the West Coast Conference announced the 13th annual WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes that have balanced athletic success with academic excellence.

Six members of the BYU men's basketball team were recognized as Andrew Johnston and Graham Pingree received Gold Honors (3.76-4.00), Eric Mika and Luke Worthington received Silver Honors, while Skyler Halford and Tyler Haws received Bronze Honors. It was the second straight year Haws has made the honor roll.

Haws was named WCC Player of the Year and lead the conference in scoring with 23.2 points per game. Pingree, Johnston, Mika, Worthington and Halford were all in their first season at BYU. Mika was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team and averaged 11.8 points per game and 6.4 rebounds. Halford averaged 7.0 points and earned WCC Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 6. Worthington played in 31 games, starting in three while he averaged 1.0 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. Pingree and Johnston were walk-ons, but played in seven and nine games, respectively.

Honor roll honorees were student-athletes who averaged 12 credit hours, lettered for their team and earned a cumulative GPA for the year of 3.00 or above.
