Player Notes

Tyler Haws

Haws finished with 19 points, four rebounds, one assist and a steal. It was Haws' 48th straight game scoring in double digits – the fourth-longest streak in BYU history. He continued his consecutive free throw streak with four made free throws to run his active streak to 30. He had a streak of 30 made free throws earlier in the season that carried over from the 2012-13 season. He's tied with himself for the fifth longest streak in BYU history. Haws also moved into 15th place by himself in career steals with 105.

Haws finished with the fifth most points in a season with 767, 13 points shy of his sophomore season. He also finished with the fourth most free throws made in a season (224) and seventh most free throw attempts in a season (253).

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with 15 points, five assists and two rebounds. Thursday was Carlino's first start since Dec. 30, 2013, at Pepperdine. Carlino moved into 27th on the career scoring list with 1,201 points.

His two made 3-pointers gave him the 16th most 3-pointers made in a season (60), tied with Lee Cummard, Bob Capener and Terrell Lyday. His five assists also give him the 11th most assists in a season (150), tied with Austin Ainge.

Eric Mika

Mika finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and an assist. He took and made a career high in free throws going 11 of 16 from the line. His 16 free throw attempts is a BYU NCAA tournament game record, while his 11 made free throws are second most at BYU in an NCAA tournament game and are the most since Bernie Fryer made 13 in 1971. 

His 15 points were the 24th time this season he has scored in double figures. That is the third most by a freshman, tied with Shawn Bradley. He also had two offensive rebounds, which gives him the most offensive rebounds in a season in BYU history with 93.

Anson Winder

Winder's 100th career game and 25th career start led to seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with five rebounds, two points and a steal. His four offensive rebounds tied him for third most offensive rebounds in a season (90) with Jared Miller. He only trails Mika (93) and Rafael Araujo (91).

Frank Bartley IV

Bartley finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Bartley scored in double figures for the first time since UMass on Dec. 7, 2013.

Josh Sharp

Sharp finished with three rebounds and three assists.

Luke Worthington

Worthington finished with two rebounds.

Skyler Halford

Halford finished with two assists and one rebound.

Team Notes

The Cougars ran out a starting lineup without Kyle Collinsworth (suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Gonzaga in the WCC Championship game) for the first time this season. Carlino, Winder, Haws, Austin and Mika started together for the first time all year.

Haws, Mika, Bartley and Carlino scored in double figures. BYU finished the season 11-6 when four players score in double digits.

Runs

BYU finished the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 39-31. Bartley scored four points, Carlino two and Mika made one free throw.

A 5-0 run cut the lead to three at 56-53 with 12 minutes left in the second half. Mika made a putback and Carlino hit a 3-pointer, but Oregon countered with 31-9 run to put the game away.

BYU head coach Dave Rose

Q.  Coach, Cook was mentioned, and there had been a number of games where maybe an unexpected guy has gone off for a season high. Is it maybe you guys losing track of lesser-known players?

"I think that, in this case it all came down to their ability to penetrate the ball. It didn't matter if it was Johnathan Loyd or Joseph Young or Calliste. They all took turns penetrating the ball in, and then as soon as we would step up and help, they would find whoever it was. Cook was the man who benefited from the most of those assists from Johnathan Loyd and Calliste." 

"They're a very talented team. Really, the scouting report was pretty thorough, and I think that our guys were just overwhelmed at times as far as being able to control their penetration. They just keep coming at us, and I think that's what really hurt us."

Q.  Dave, what were the differences between this game and the game in December as far as the pace goes and your getting into attack mode?

"I think our perimeter defense was a little better in that game. I think that we were a lot more confident in the times when we got open shots. We shot a few rushed shots and forced shots tonight, but even the shots that were in rhythm and at our pace seemed to be a little bit maybe more contested."

"I think that we didn't have quite the space to operate in at our – in our rhythm like we normally do."

"It seemed like even Tyler, when he got a little open, it was kind of rushed and I think maybe that affected our shooting percentage. We shot 33 percent from the field and we're a much better shooting team than that. You have to give Oregon a lot of credit for how they contested us."

Q.  Dave, you had mentioned the other day how the team was really emotional practicing for the first time without Kyle.  In huddles when things weren't going well, could you kind of maybe sense that guys really missed him at that point or were they at least separated from the fact that he obviously --

"We had a great feel in the huddle after the first 12 minutes of the game. I thought we had a little bit of a lull, but we were able to come back and cut it to eight at the half."

"Our guys went in with a good feel to them, and then in the second half, it got up a little bit, but our guys fought back and we hit the three to cut it to three and then called timeout. It felt real, it felt right, and our guys were encouraged and they were pulling for each other. Just like the normal huddles that we have most of the time."

Tyler Haws

Q.  Tyler, you get it down to 3, as Coach mentioned.  What did Oregon do to really run that lead back?  I know they got five quick points, and where did they drive the rest of the game?

"They just got in the lane and got easy buckets, got to the foul line, and they just kept making plays. And you have to give them a lot of credit for answering our run."

Q.  Tyler, were there times during the game where you thought wow, we really could use Kyle here, and what impact did him not being here have on you guys?

"Kyle, he's a guy that you can't replace, and he brings so much to our team but, you know, even with him out, I thought we had chances to win this game. We cut it to three, and I thought we had momentum and guys stepped up. Even when shots weren't falling, they stayed in mentally. So, even with him out, I'm proud of the way we fought and thought we had our chance."

Anson Winder

Q.  Anson, there were stretches where you played real well defensively and kept the guys in front of you and then others where there were lapses.  Can you kind of describe what happened there to the perimeter defense?

"I think we just got a little lackadaisical, myself included. I think sometimes in the course of a game, you kind of expect things to happen and you don't go out and make them happen yourself, and I take responsibility for that, and our team. I give credit to Oregon because they played a really good game and executed their offense well."
