Player Notes

Tyler Haws

In his 100th career game and 50th career conference game, Haws finished with 25 points, three assists, two rebounds and a block. Haws passed Fred Roberts (1,841) for sixth in career scoring at BYU. He now has 1,855 points in his career and is 30 from tying Russell Larson for fifth (1,885).

Haws has also scored in double digits in 44 straight games, which is tied for the fourth longest streak in BYU history with Jeff Chatman and Russell Larson. The 20-point effort was Haws' 47th of his career and 18th this season. Haws is fifth on the career list for 20-point games. To this point in the season, Haws has the eighth most points in a season with 678 points.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Collinsworth now has the ninth most assists in a single season with 151 and the ninth most steals in a season with 53.

Anson Winder

Winder started for the third straight game and fifth time this season. He scored 11 points, grabbed three rebounds and had an assist and a block. Winder had his consecutive free throw streak of 16 ended as he missed his first attempt from the line on Saturday.

Winder has set career season highs in field goals made, free throws made and free throws attempted and points. Winder also has improved his field goal percentage from 38 percent last season to 54 percent this season.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, one assist and a steal. Austin scored all his points and grabbed eight of his rebounds in the second half and was big down the stretch scoring five points in the last six minutes and all his points in the last 11 minutes of the game.

Austin's four offensive rebounds moved him up to a tie for seventh in offensive rebounds for a season with 81.

Austin has set career season highs in offensive and total rebounds, blocks and steals.

Luke Worthington

Worthington started for the second straight game and second time this season. He finished with a rebound, a block and a steal.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with 14 points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal. He was 3 of 6 from 3-point range and passed Lee Cummard (153) on the career 3-pointers made list for sixth place with 154.

Carlino also passed Doug Howard, Elwood Romney and is now tied with Kari Liimo with 1,156 points for 31st on the career scoring list. Carlino now has the 14th most assists in a season with 142 and is eighth in steals in a season with 58.

Carlino has set career season highs for 3-pointers made, free throws attempted and made and points.

Eric Mika

Mika scored six points, grabbed three rebounds, had two assists and a steal. His three offensive rebounds tied him with Shawn Bradley for the most offensive rebounds by a freshman with 77.

Team Notes

Collinsworth, Winder, Haws, Worthington and Austin started for the second straight game and second time this season. The Cougars are now 2-0 with that starting group.

Haws, Winder, Carlino and Collinsworth scored in double figures. BYU his 10-5 when four players score in double figures.

The team shot 65.4 percent from the field in the first half. Its best first half percentage all season and third best half behind the second half of Mount St. Mary's and the second half of Prairie View A&M.

Thanks to the addition of Pacifc to the conference and two extra conference games this season, the regular season finale was the 50th career conference game for Haws, Winder, Austin and Carlino.

Runs

BYU used a 14-1 run to take a 25-13 lead with 11:54 left in the first half. Collinsworth hit a jumper and Mika made a jumper before Haws hit a 3-pointer and long jumper forcing a San Diego timeout. After the break, Carlino hit a 3-pointer and Haws made a layup in transition for the 12-point lead.

After San Diego took a 50-47 lead, BYU scored five points on its next possession as Carlino hit a 3-pointer and Austin made both free throws on a simultaneous foul down low. Haws' dunk off a steal gave BYU a 54-50 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.

The Cougars went on a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead with under six minutes remaining. Haws made a jumper, Mika made two free throws and Austin added a three-point play on a putback for the five-point advantage.

Leading by two with two minutes left, BYU went on a 9-0 run over the next 1:40. Collinsworth hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to give the Cougars a big enough advantage to make San Diego start fouling. Austin, Carlino, Haws and Collinsworth scored the next six points, four of which came at the line.

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"If you watch San Diego play this year you know every game seems to be pretty close. Their games are two, three, four point games. They're usually really close games. What it takes to win games like this is for the whole groups of guys to play well. The toughness issue is so underrated. You've got to find ways to get baskets and it's ironic that the way you win it is on two scramble plays. Kyle gets a look late in the shot clock and hits a big three. We ended up bringing it ahead and score on a layup. You need guys to make plays so you can overcome challenges."

"One of the real issues is, answering the call when they put a run on you. We've got a little bit of a lead and teams put a run on us and we kind of fold a little bit and get down. They got a two-point lead, but our guys really responded well. We kept it a two-point game for a while and then we made a couple huge plays. We can go through about 10 or 15 different plays and tell you those plays had to be made or we weren't going to win. There's just huge plays from a lot of guys."

Turnovers and rebounding:

"That was a challenge for our guys. Those are all toughness stats and that's where you have to dig down and make those plays. Big guys are throwing you around and the balls out on the floor."  

"We were in the game because we made shots. We were shooting the ball really well and if we didn't shoot it we were turning it over. Defensively, they were ripping the ball from us. We had two or three open transition plays that the ball got turned over on."

"In the second half, the guys responded to the offensive rebound challenge and not turning the ball over. It was a positive we could reinforce, that if you control the rebound situation and don't turn the ball over we're going to win. The way it turned out the guys made enough plays to win it."

Guys stepping up:

"We're getting really good play from a lot of guys. Late in the year what do you really need to have happen? You need guys who aren't scouted a lot, guys that haven't been your go-to guys or haven't been in a certain role to really step up and change the flow of your team. Anson, Luke, Josh and Matt and Skyler's role has changed and gave us a huge lift tonight from a couple big plays. You need that from your guys. One of the real important things is for your steady guys to be steady and we've gotten that. Those guys have been pretty good every night and now we're getting some real help from a lot of different areas." 

Stopping Dee or Anderson:

"With Chris Anderson, the guys executed our game plan the way we wanted. We were dead set on not having it be Johnny Dee because he's beaten a lot of teams in this league from three in his three years here. On Anderson, when you're 4 of 6 you feel like everything you throw up there is going in and he buried a couple more."

Tyler Haws

Team win:

"It was a great team effort. I'm so proud of the way we battled for 40 minutes. We got up 16 in the first half. I felt like we had a good lead and they came back and hit a bunch of shots and actually took the lead in the second half. We've been in that situation before and it has gone the other way or we've responded to it differently. We're learning how to win in those situations and guys made really big plays."

Play of the day:

"There were two big plays for me. Kyle's three when we were up two and that put us up five and Nate had an and-1 that gave us a real boost and some momentum and kind of gave us that edge we needed down the stretch."

"That was a big play for us and then on the defensive end Nate had a few big rebounds. I feel like we got stops when we needed to those last four minutes." 

Johnny Dee:

"You have to give Dee a ton of attention. You have to know where he is at all times on the floor because he can make a shot from anywhere…He was a huge key for us on the scouting report, I think we did a good job on him and made him shoot contested, tough shots the whole night."

Chris Anderson:

"We were going to make him hit those shots. He has a game like this every 10-15 games. It seems like lots of guys do that against us."
