Player Notes

Haws finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. It was the 42nd straight game Haws has scored in double digits, the sixth longest streak in BYU history.

Haws now has the 11th most points in a season in BYU history with 638. He is now 18th by himself in career 3-pointers made with 103. Haws is also 17th in career steals with 100.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth finished with eight points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals. It was the first time in 21 games he failed to score in double digits. Collinsworth now has the 14th most assists (141) and steals (49) in a season in BYU history.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with three rebounds, two blocks, two points and a steal. It was Austin's 100th game played as a Cougar. BYU is 69-31 with him in the lineup.

Josh Sharp

Sharp started his third game of the season and finished with one rebound and one block in seven minutes.

Anson Winder

Winder also started for the third time this season. He led the team in scoring with 17 points, 12 coming in the second half and five in the first two minutes of the game to give BYU an early lead.

Winder was a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line and finished with three rebounds and an assist in 26 minutes. He set a career high in free throws made and attempted and scored the most points he has in a second half this season.

Matt Carlino

Carlino totaled 15 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Carlino stretched the lead to eight by scoring two quick baskets with two minutes left in the game. Gonzaga cut the lead back down to four, but never got closer.

Carlino moved into 37th on the career sccoring list at BYU, passing Mark Handy, Terrell Lyday, Gary Earnest and John Fairchild. He also scored his 1,100th point. Carlino also moved into 7th place by himself on the career 3-pointers made list.

Carlino also now has the 8th most steals in a season and the 17th most assists in a season.

Eric Mika

Mika finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, one block and a steal. He scored in double digits for the 22nd time this season, the fifth most by a freshman in BYU history.

Skyler Halford

Halford scored four points, three rebounds and made an assist all in the first half.

Luke Worthington

Worthington scored two points and grabbed two rebounds.

Team Notes

Collinsworth, Winder, Haws, Sharp and Austin started together for the first time this season. Winder and Sharp started in place of Mika and Halford. The Cougars used the same starting lineup over their last 10 games prior to Thursday, going 7-3 in that stretch.

BYU is now 13-1 at home this season.

Mika, Haws, Winder and Carlino scored in double digits. BYU is now 9-5 when four players score in double digits.

Everyone who played recorded a rebound and seven of the 10 grabbed three or more.

Runs

In the first half, Halford helped the Cougars grab a 21-15 lead with two points, which came off steals and a Haws jumper.

The Cougars started off the second half on a 6-0 run as Haws hit a jumper, while Austin and Collinsworth each scored off an offensive rebound. The Cougars never trailed again, but never held a lead larger than eight either.

On not starting:

"It was nice to see how the game was going, how the flow was for a minute or two and then be able to go in. All the other big guys on the other team were a little bit tired after a couple minutes because of the pace of the game, so I think [not starting] did help. It was a physical game. All four of their big guys are huge, so it was a battle."

Gonzaga head coach Mark Few

"I thought it was a hard-fought game. Down the stretch, BYU did a good job of amping it up on the glass and really hurt us. Definitely in that second half on the glass and getting to the free-throw line, I thought was pretty much the difference in the game.

Perimeter struggles:

"It hurt. Obviously they were dialed in. They were trying to chase Kevin (Pangos) and Gary (Bell) a little bit, but we still had some pretty good looks out there. Gary had a lot of good looks. We just didn’t knock them down. They did a good job of locating Kevin and staying in tune with him wherever he was and the other guys just missed them."

Stopping Haws:

"We’ve done a good job with Tyler (Haws) pretty much every time we’ve played him. He’s a great player and I love how smart he is, how aggressive he is, and how he understands how to get to a shot and get to the free-throw line. I think Gary Bell did a good job understanding how to guard him. (Kyle) Dranginis did a good job and Pangos did a good job. But (Eric) Mika hurt us. He hurt us especially when Przemek (Karnowski) wasn’t in there. He hurt us going at some of our other guys."

On what BYU brings to the WCC:

"They bring a national brand, a national program, a big-time arena that you could take anywhere in any league and it would be big time, a great fan base and a great rivalry with us."

On BYU's points off turnovers:

"Those hurt. They were bad early, and then they were bad in that little stretch right in the second half where we had the ball right at point blank twice and didn't get anything. Then we had some silly ones right at the end. You just can’t do that on the road — you cannot do that on the road, anywhere on the road, let alone here."
