Haws earns second WCC Player of the Week honor

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU junior guard Tyler Haws its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for February 3, 2014.

Haws led the Cougars to back-to-back home wins over Pacific and Saint Mary’s while averaging 35.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals. He shot 59.5 percent (22 of 37) from the field, 66.7 percent (6 of 9) from three and 91.3 percent (21 of 23) from the free throw line.

Against Pacific Haws scored 38 points while hitting 12 of 20 from the field, 4 of 5 from three and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. He scored 21 of BYU’s first 25 points to start the game as he hit 8 of 9 from the field, 2 of 2 from three and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. His scoring binge helped BYU to a 25-16 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes. He added a 3-pointer late in the half and scored 14 points in the second.

Haws scored 33 points against Saint Mary's on 10 of 17 shooting from the field, 2 of 4 from three and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. He also added seven rebounds and two steals. After missing his first four field goal attempts, Haws hit 3 of 4 from the field and assisted on a three in the last six minutes of the first half as the Cougars rallied from down 30-19 to only trail by one at the break, 38-37.

With the Cougars trailing 44-43 early in the second half, Haws hit a 3-pointer that put BYU ahead 46-44 and the Cougars led the rest of the way. He finished the second half with 22 points, his ninth half this season with at least 20 points and the second half with 20-plus points in the last two games.
