Player Notes

For the second straight game and third time in the last four, Haws scored 30 or more points. He finished with 33 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Haws scored the 1,700th point of his career on a 3-pointer in the second half that gave BYU the lead for good. He's the second fastest in BYU history to reach the milestone, doing so in his 93rd game. Only Danny Ainge did it quicker, needing only 90 games. Haws also passed Mark Bigelow for the ninth spot in career scoring.

Haws made his 100th career 3-pointer to tie the game at 35-35 in the first half. He also tied Brandon Davies for eighth in career free throws made. It was his 10th career 30-point game, tying him for fifth with Kresimir Cosic in career 30-point nights. It was the 44th time he has scored 20 or more, also good for fifth at BYU. Saturday was the 37th straight game Haws has scored in double digits, which is tied with Bernie Fryer for the seventh longest streak in BYU history.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth tied his career high in points and free throws made with 20 points, including eight from the line. He was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine and added two assists.

Eric Mika

Mika scored five points and totaled seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with six points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. He passed Alan Pollard for 16th in career blocks at BYU with 63. Austin has scored five or more points in each of the past four games, his longest streak this season.

Skyler Halford

Halford scored four points and managed to make the opening field goal in both halves. He added a rebound.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Anson Winder

Winder finished with seven points and was perfect from the field hitting 3 of 3, including a 3-pointer that cut into Saint Mary's early lead.

Team Notes

BYU started Collinsworth, Halford, Haws, Austin and Mika for the sixth straight game and seventh game this season. BYU is now 5-2 with that starting five.

The Cougars only had two players score in double digits for the first time this season. Haws and Collinsworth both broke 20.

Saint Mary's 14-point lead was the largest deficit overcome this season by the Cougars. The previous largets deficit came against Loyola Marymount in the Marriot Center in January.

"It felt good to finally beat these guys. I was really proud of the way our guys competed on both ends of the floor. We had the slow start and we’ve had a few games this year where we’ve had slow starts and we haven’t been able to figure it out or fix it, so I was proud of how we competed and fought back."

"I just find my rhythm and my teammates do a good job of getting me the ball in places where I can be effective. As much as I’m happy with the scoring, I feel like we are figuring some things out defensively and that’s leading to a lot of offensive opportunities. If we can continue to do that I think this team can just continue to get better."

"All of us were in a weird spot those first eight or nine minutes of the game and things weren’t going our way, but we just stayed aggressive and kept shooting good shots. We were making good plays and were able to get in a rhythm."

Kyle Collinsworth

"We didn’t want to go into halftime down double digits, so we fought through it and we were down one at halftime. That was huge for us."

"We didn’t do a good enough job going inside-out. Those are two words: it’s got to come back out. Waldo had guys hammering him all night. He’s got a tough job there. They’re not going to call them all. They called a lot of them, but they’re not going to call them all. So, he had six turnovers - very uncharacteristic of him."

"Our biggest problem was our defense in the second half and a little bit our shot selection in the second half. Our shot selection led to them getting easy transition points. It put them in bonus shooting free throws. That was our problem."

"Our game plan was to make him take tough shots. You’re not going to stop him. We did a great job on him in the first half. In the second half, we got out of handle a little bit. He’s really good.
