PROVO, Utah – Tyler Haws’ 33 points and a strong second half led the BYU men’s basketball team to an 84-71 victory over Saint Mary’s on Saturday.

"It’s a good win for our team," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "You knew that Saint Mary’s would really give their best effort. Our guys were really good the last 30 minutes of this game as far as responding to the physical nature and consistently making plays and executing our game plan."

Haws went 10 of 17 from the field and 11 of 12 from the charity stripe to go along with seven rebounds for the game. Kyle Collinsworth finished with a near double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Anson Winder and Matt Carlino came off the bench to score seven points each. Eric Mika finished with five points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Nate Austin added six points, five rebounds and two blocks.

The Cougars got off to a slow start, trailing 14-4 at the 14:58 mark in the first half. Collinsworth scored the next six points for BYU, but the Cougars were still down 10 with 11:13 left in the half. Winder’s drive down the lane and Collinsworth’s three-point play cut the deficit to nine at 28-17.

A 6-2 BYU run that included Frank Bartley IV’s layup in transition, Haws’ first field goal and a Winder 3-pointer at the 5:35 mark made it a six-point game. Collinsworth fed Haws for a 3-pointer to tie it at 35 and the two combined to score BYU's last eight points to make it a one-point game at halftime, with Saint Mary's leading 38-37.

Collinsworth finished with a team-high 14 points and six rebounds at the half, while Haws ended the half with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals. BYU went on a 23-10 run the last 8:26 of the half.

The Cougars and Gaels traded baskets to start the second half with Halford opening it with a jumper to give BYU a one-point lead. Haws scored the next seven BYU points, including another 3-pointer at the 16:11 mark, and was followed by a Carlino drive in transition for the 52-47 lead. Mika’s hook capped BYU’s 13-3 run to lead by nine.

Carlino hit a 3-pointer for BYU’s first double-digit lead at 59-49 with 11:05 remaining. After Saint Mary's hit a three, Collinsworth answered with a three-point play on a baseline drive. Haws continued his hot streak scoring six points in 1:09 to extend BYU’s lead to 77-61 with under four minutes left in the game. Saint Mary’s Garrett Jackson was ejected with a flagrant 2 with under a minute left to play, while BYU kept its double-digit lead.

BYU kept the Gaels to a 36.4 shooting percentage in the second half, while outrebounding them 38-33 for the game. There were a total of nine lead changes and the Cougars scored 15 points off Saint Mary's nine turnovers. 

BYU will host Santa Clara on Thursday at 9 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
