Player Notes

Haws finished with 38 points on 12 of 20 shooting, 4 of 5 from the 3-point line and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. He added two rebobunds, two steals, a block and an assist.

Haws scored 24 points in the first half, which is the most he's scored before halftime this season and the most in the opening half since he scored 29 against Virginia Tech. It is also only the second time he's scored 20 in an opening half. Twenty-four points is tied for the second most he's ever scored in a half. He scored 11 of the the team's first 13 points and 21 of the first 25 before he was subbed out for the first time. It also marked the eighth time in his career that he has scored at least 20 points in a half. Six of those 20-point halves have come this season.

Haws passed Brandon Davies for 10th in career scoring at BYU on a layup with 8:27 left in the second half. He also passed Ken Roberts for 11th earlier in the night. His 38 points give him 1,686 points in his career.

Thursday night was the 43rd 20-point game of his career, which is good for fifth at BYU. The 30-point game was his ninth and is sixth most in BYU history. It was the 36th straight game scoring in double figures, the eighth longest streak in BYU history.

Over the past three games, Haws has scored 109 points, an average of 36.3 points per game.

Eric Mika

Mika tied his career high in points and set career highs in assists and steals. He finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. It was the 19th time he's scored in double figures this season, the seventh most by a freshman at BYU.

Kyle Collinsworth

In Collinsworth's 50th start as a Cougar, he scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists and made two steals. It was his fourth straight game with four or more assists and his 15th straight scoring in double figures.

Nate Austin

Austin finished with seven points, eight rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Austin has scored five or more points in each of the past three games, his longest streak of the season. He's also grabbed seven or more rebounds in eight of the last nine games.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with six assists and three points to go with two steals. He made one 3-pointer to pass Nick Sanderson for eighth all by himself in career 3-point field goals made in BYU history.

Skyler Halford

Halford scored in double figures for the sixth time since he was inserted into the starting lineup. He finished with 10 points, one assist and one steal.

Josh Sharp

Sharp grabbed seven rebounds, five of which were on the offensive side.

Team Notes

BYU started Collinsworth, Halford, Haws, Austin and Mika for the fifth straight game. The Cougars are now 4-2 with those five starters.

The Cougars had four players score in double figures as Haws, Mika, Collinsworth and Halford scored more than 10 points.

“I thought it was a hard fought game. I though our execution was good at times and our energy was good the whole game. You look at the stats and we had 17 offensive rebounds and 10 steals, and that tells you that our guys are active, involved and playing with good energy and urgency.”

Eric Mika

On his first big game since his injury:

“It feels good. I mean it feels better than a game like Portland. It was a physical game, which is what I like to play, so it was a good game to come back and play well. Just like Tyler said, I don’t even know how I scored a lot of my baskets. I was just wide open and guys were hitting me on cuts and made it really easy for me.”

On what it’s like for others when Tyler is hot:

“When Ty gets off and starts like that, it definitely helps everyone. It definitely helps me because I know if I don’t have an open shot I’ll kick it out to him and he’ll make it or move it because they’re going to double him.”

Pacific head coach Ron Verlin

"We were trying to do a great job on Haws. We started with Taku on him and then TJ Wallace, and they did a great job, and then it ran short a little bit, and he’s a very good player. When he gets a crack he can make it and we were trying to deny him the ball and limit his touches, but he got to the line a lot of times and made 10 of 11 free throws. He made big plays and made big shots."

"We've got to be aggressive. We've got to be physical. We've got to play hard-nose, tough defense. I think we can do a better job of guarding Haws when they come to the Spanos Center. We've got to do a good job of keeping the ball inside and out of Mika’s hands. He got it too easy."

"I liked our shooting percentage tonight, and I thought our tempo was good, but our rebounding and their second chance points really went large on us tonight and they got second and thirrd chance opportunities."

"Bock got to the basket and Taku got to the basket and we had an advantage driving the ball tonight, but they worked the zone right from the start, so it was hard on us. They have a big, long zone that is tough to go against and it was tough on us."
