BYU vs, Portland Story

BYU vs. Portland Box Score

Player Notes

Tyler Haws

Haws scored a career-high 48 points, tied for the most points scored in Division I play this year. Only Jimmer Fredette has scored more points in a single game in a Cougar uniform. The junior guard moves into sixth place alongside Dick Nemelka with eight games of 30 points or more. The output marks his 34th straight game in double figures -- the eighth longest in BYU history.

Matt Carlino

Carlino came off the bench to score 25 points. He has now hit three 3-pointers in four consecutive games and moves into eight all-time in school history with Nick Sanderson with 129 3-point field goals made. The junior also added a career-high seven steals, nine assists, two rebounds and a block. He has notched 141 career steals, good for sixth all-time at BYU.

Skyler Halford

Halford scored 13 points and added four rebounds and one block.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth recorded his fifth double-double this year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. He also chipped in four assists and a steal.

Nate Austin

Austin pulled down a personal-best 15 rebounds, including five offensive boards. The junior passes Mekeli Wesley and is tied with Kyle Collinsworth for third in school history with 58 offensive rebounds. He also added seven points for the Cougars where five of his points came from free throws.

Eric Mika

Mika contributed four points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.

Josh Sharp

Sharp collected three rebounds and hit a single foul shot late in the game.

Anson Winder

Winder dished out two assists in the triple overtime loss.

Team Notes

Collinsworth, Haws, Halford, Austin and Mika started for the fourth straight game. The Cougars are 3-1 with that starting lineup.

The team falls to 5-4 this season when four players score in double figures.

BYU notched its fourth game of the season with 100 points or more but lost for just the first time when passing the century mark.

The Cougars last played a triple overtime game in 1998 when they beat UTEP 76-75.

The loss marks just the first time BYU has lost to Portland in 10 contests.

Quotes from the Cougar IMG Sports Network Postgame Show

Head coach Dave Rose

"I don't know if we played well enought to win. There were so many things we didn't do as well as we needed to. Rebounding the ball and missed free throws really hit us late. We had a nice lead in the second overtime and Bobby Sharp got loose and hit a couple tough shots. But those things were in the scouting report. So there were a lot of things we let get passed us. They knew that Ty [Haws] is a pretty good scorer and he scored 48 so it goes both ways I guess."

On being down late in the game and forcing overtime:

"Going into the first overtime I thougth we had a great attitude because we saved the day and got into the overtime. They got a nice lead starting it then we figured out a way to get it to the second overtime. The second overtime was probably where we played our best. We had a good look at the end of the second overtime, I though that shot by Ty on the baseline was going in. Then down the stretch they made some huge plays, we missed some free throws and couldn't seal the deal."

Tyler Haws

"I thought we made the plays and had the effort to win the game but you've got to give Portland credit – they hit some ridiculously tough shots, kept themselves in the game and found a way to win."

On coming back late to force overtime:

"We felt like we came back from the dead a few times but our guys just kept fighting. Everyone on our sideline believed and I thought we had it."

On what he could have done better:

"They were coming at me very aggresivlely on defense. I wish I could have drawn a few more fouls, got a few more guys in the air. I tried to stay aggressive all night but it just stinks, it doesn't matter how many points you score if you don't win."

"I was proud of the way our guys competed, no one ever gave up. We definitely had our chances and the opportunities were there to win the game but we just didn't get it done."
