Player Notes

Haws finished with a season-high 32 points. He also added two rebounds, a steal and a block.

His 30-point effort was the fifth of his career which has him tied for eighth in career 30-point games with Timo Saarelainen. Haws' 20-point game moved him into sixth by himself in career 20-point games with 37.

Haws scored 18 points in the first half. He scored nine of BYU's first 12 points and 14 of the first 25. Haws passed Roland Minson and Jay Cheesman on the career scoring list. Haws is now in 16th in career points at BYU with 1,432.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists and two steals.

Carlino made two 3-pointers and passed Randy Reid for 12th on the career 3-point field goals made list. He trails Michael Smith by one for 11th. Carlino also passed Nick Sanderson for 8th in 3-point attempts.

Eric Mika

Mika fouled out in regulation with 13 points, eight rebounds and one assist. It was his 13th straight game scoring in double figures.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth finished with 15 points, eight assists, two blocks and a steal. It was the seventh game of the season when Collinsworth led the Cougars in assists.

Nate Austin

Austin fouled out in regulation with four points, 12 rebounds, two assists and a steal. Austin recorded double digit rebounds for the sixth time this season.

Skyler Halford

Halford set his own season-high for first half scoring, netting 10 points. He finished with 12 points and two rebounds.

Team Notes

Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika started for the ninth straight game and 11th time this season. The Cougars are 6-5 with that lineup.

BYU used a 7-0 run to take a 25-18 lead eight minutes into the first half. The Cougars again made a 9-2 run to take a 40-32 lead with 6:11 left in the first half.

The last time BYU played an overtime game was in the NCAA tournament against Florida in 2011. The last overtime win was against Florida in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Saturday's loss was the first time in the Dave Rose era BYU lost a game when leading with a minute to play in regulation.

The Cougars had five players in double digit scoring for the seventh time this season. Haws, Collinsworth, Carlino, Mika and Halford accounted for all but nine of BYU's 96 points.

Quotes

"This is tough. It's really a tough loss. Our guys played hard enough and well enough, but the bottom line is that's a game that got away. The guys feel really bad about it and hopefully we can recover and get started and get rolling for league because this is a tough one."

"I think the guys were really focused and dialed in and had a lot to prove to themselves and each other. The bottom line is it comes down to execution on a few plays offensively and defensively. They got some offensive rebounds and putbacks late. Those are winnings plays. You need to make winning plays and they made more than we did."

Overtime without Mika and Austin:

"That was an issue, playing the overtime. What I really felt was important for us was getting good shots and putting pressure on them by keeping the lead. Their point guard and his dribble penetration led to a lot of baskets. He drew the help and passed out of the help. That second pass out of there led to some open shots and caused us some real issues and then the rotation caused us some rebounding issues."

Starting WCC play next week:

"There's no wiggle room here now. We jump right into this thing next Saturday in the league on the road. They're really important games for us. We not only have to play well, but we have to finish the game and win."

Nate Austin

"We led the whole game and made plays basically the whole game down the stretch, they made some plays and outscored us its a tough loss. We led the entire game and the whole team believed we were going to win the game and then and when the final buzzer sounded we lost. It was a tough one to swallow."

Man-to-man defense:

"It's something we worked on. They were really good at penetrating and shooting threes. We thought our man-to-man could stop that or provide some resistance. For the most part we did a pretty good job and made them make tough shots. They hit some tough shots and credit to them at the end they just outscored us."

Lost double digit leads vs. ranked teams:

"It's something we have to learn is how to close games -- Iowa State, Wichita. We have to stay together and these losses have to mean something. We have to learn from these losses. If we can learn from these losses and in conference get those big wins then these losses can mean something for us."

Coming off the Utah loss:

"We got better this week. That's the key for us each practice each week we have to get better. We were so close today in this game. we're frankly sick of losing. We've come so close four times and we've got to use that feeling to close out games."
