Player Notes

Tyler Haws

Haws finished with 14 points, six rebounds, one assist and a steal against Utah. It was his 25th straight game scoring in double figures. His free throw with 5:11 left in the game was his 1,400th career point. Haws is the third fastest in BYU history to score 1,400 points doing it in his 81st game. Only Danny Ainge and Kresimir Cosic did it faster.

Haws passed Andy Toolson for 18th on the BYU scoring list with his 3-pointer that cut the lead to 12 with 5:37 left in the first half. He also passed Gary Trost for 13th all-time in career free throws made with his free throw to open the second half.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with seven points, four rebounds and two steals. He made BYU's first 3-pointer of the game to tie Austin Ainge for 13th on the career 3-point field goals made list. He also passed Matt Montague for 11th in career steals at BYU.

Eric Mika

Mika finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was his second career double-double. He also had two assists, a block and a steal.

Mika was ejected from the game with a flagrant two foul at 8:28 in the second half. The last Cougar ejected was Nate Austin against Wichita State earlier this season. 

Collinsworth finished one rebound shy of his third double-double of the season. He finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. He scored 10 of his points and pulled down seven rebounds in the first half. He played all 20 minutes in the first half and didn't leave the floor until there were four minutes left in the second half.

Anson Winder

Winder finished with seven points, a rebound, an assist and a steal and was the leading scorer off the bench for the Cougars.

Josh Sharp

Sharp tied his season high with four points to go along with three rebounds, a block and an assist. He played a season-high 15 minutes.

His consecutive free throw streak ended with his miss four minutes into the second half. He had made 13 straight dating back to January 2013.

Team Notes

The Cougars started Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika for the eighth straight game and 10th time this season. That starting lineup is now 6-4.

BYU trailed by 13 points at halftime, the largest deficit at half this season. Utah led by as many as 18 in the first half and 23 in the second.

Saturday was only the third time this season BYU only had three players score in double figures. The last time was a loss against Wichita State when BYU shot 31 percent from the field. The Cougars shot 32 percent against Utah.

Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

“They came out with a lot of energy and shot the ball really well. It’s a good team. They'd won eight before tonight for a reason and their offensive numbers are really impressive. It’s a driving team that can really get to the rim and kick the ball out.”

On offensive struggles:

“We never really found ourselves. Our shooting percentage was so bad, I think that guys tried to take it on themselves to maybe get a little too deep with the ball or get to the rim and score. We thought that would be something we could penetrate and find open guys, but it seems like we over penetrated a little bit and got to the rim and had a hard time finishing. We got fouled and we got to the free-throw line and had a hard time making free throws and that makes you a little less aggressive.”

On Utah’s confidence and countering it:

“We had a lot of chances in the first half. It got up to about 15 or 16 and we got three or four straight stops and we would come down and dribble the ball off our foot. We weren’t in sync and a lot of that had to do with the atmosphere and their athleticism, length and size. It wasn’t our best game, that’s for sure.”

“They just beat us. They played really well from the start and we couldn’t answer their runs. You've got to give them a lot of credit.”

“We don’t get tense against anyone. We just come out and battle and we didn’t hit shots tonight. We didn’t feel like ourselves for whatever reason and we need to fix it. “

On Jordan Loveridge:

“He just got open shots. We came in knowing he was a good player and he found a way to get open a few times and got it going a little bit."

On defensive concerns:

“We have to stick together going forward and we can’t point fingers at anyone. It’s a team thing and we just have to get better.”

“It’s tough to fight it, but we have to find a way to score the ball when your outside shots aren’t falling. We didn’t do a good job going inside, we didn’t really play inside out. There are a lot of things we can do better."
