Player Notes

Haws finished with 25 points, three rebounds, one block and one assist.

His 20 points moved Haws into a tie with Jeff Chatman for 6th all-time with 36 career 20-point games.

Haws tied his season high for first-half points with 15. He also scored 15 in the first half against North Texas on Tuesday night.

Haws made 6 of 6 free throws against UMass to continue his consecutive free throws made streak to 30, which is the fifth longest all-time at BYU. He passed streaks of 26 by himself last season, 27 by Stephen Rogers in 2010-11 and 28 by Jimmer Fredette also in 2010-11.

He finished one free throw shy of Gary Trost for 13th all-time in career free throws made.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished with 23 points, six assists and three rebounds. Carlino is one assist shy of moving into a tie for 10th all-time in career assists with Fred Roberts. This was only the second time Carlino scored 20 or more points and the Cougars lost.

Eric Mika

Mika scored 8 of BYU's first 13 points in the first 8 minutes before finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds and one steal. A first-half technical kept him out of the game for an extended period of time.

Saturday's game was Mika's ninth-straight game scoring in double figures. Mika made a career-high six free throws and tied his career high in attempts with seven.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made three assists.

Frank Bartley IV

Bartley finished with his fifth double-digit scoring game of the season. He totaled 14 points, two rebounds, one assist and a steal. Bartley tied a career high in free throws made with six and set a career high with eight attempts from the free-throw line.

Team Notes

BYU head coach Dave Rose started Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika for the sixth straight game. BYU is now 5-3 with that starting lineup.

BYU had at least five double-digit scorers for the sixth time this season (Haws, Carlino, Mika, Collinsworth and Bartley IV). Those five players combined for all but two points for the Cougars against UMass.

BYU started the second half on an 8-0 run with points from Haws, Mika and Carlino to cut the lead to 52-49. UMass ran the lead back to 64-53 by 14:28 to go of the second half.

This was the first time in the Dave Rose era BYU lost when scoring 90 points or more.

"We thought it'd be really fast paced with a lot of possessions. It's going to be really hard to come on the road and beat a team when you let them shoot 55 percent from the field and score over 100 points."

"Our guys played their hearts out. They played hard. We got into a tough spot early. We just had a hard time controlling their penetration and that was a huge part of what we had to do. We got in foul trouble early and it made us soft and they took advantage of it."

"We've got to be better than that. We've got to be able to play through it. We're going to have to play the last 10 minutes of the first half in foul trouble and be able to contest shots."

On UMass vs. other ranked teams they've played:
"I think that this team caused us the most problems in our zone. They could spread us out because of their shooters. The way they shot the ball tonight, it's tough because they don't shoot as well on paper as they did today. This group, the way they played tonight caused us a lot of problems."

Eric Mika

"We've been working on and talking a lot about how to stay out of foul trouble, so I was trying to play the way I have been the last couple games and it was hard to adjust. We couldn't figure it out soon enough."

On playing with fouls:
"The most frustrating part is I feel like I can't help as much on defense. I can try and get rebounds, but I can't contest like I want to because of fouls. They got a lot of easy buckets that I would have loved to contest and go up and get them."

On losing to ranked teams:
"I think all of them we played well, but we just need to finish them better. This game we played better in the second half and got off to a slow start defensively. We just need to figure that out quicker and we can play with anybody."
