Player Notes

Tyler Haws

Haws passed his father for career points at BYU with a layup at 11:50 in the second half. Marty Haws scored 1,337 points in his BYU career. Haws now has 1,342 career points. His 23 points also moved him into seventh all by himself in career 20-point games with 35.

With his four made free throws, Haws ran his consecutive free throw streak to 24 straight free throws. He is three free throws away from his own streak for seventh longest all-time. He pulled down four rebounds and one assist.

Matt Carlino

Carlino finished five points shy of a triple-double, but did record a double-double with 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Carlino’s 10 boards set a career high, his previous was seven, while his 11 assists tied a career high which he accomplished against Buffalo in 2011.

Carlino passed Steve Craig and Brian Taylor in career assists. He is now 11th all-time in assists with 333. He also passed Randy Reid for 12th all-time in career steals with 119.

Eric Mika

Mika set a career-high in rebounds against North Texas. He pulled down 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Mika also recorded his first career double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing those 11 boards. He also blocked one shot.

Kyle Collinsworth

Collinsworth also set a career-high in scoring with 17 points against North Texas. He made a career-high eight field goals and tied his career high for attempts. He also finished with six assists and five rebounds to go with one steal.

Nate Austin

Austin recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. His 13 boards tied his career high, which he set against Iowa State. It was the fourth time this season Austin recorded double-figure rebounds.

Skyler Halford

Halford hit a career-high three 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 16 points. He shot 60 percent from behind the arc and was also 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. He added two rebounds and one assist on the night.

Team Notes

BYU started Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika for the fifth-straight time and seventh this season. The Cougars are 5-2 with those starters.

For the fifth time this season, BYU had at least five players score in double digits. The last time five players scored in double figures was against Texas. BYU has had four players score in double figures in seven of their nine games this year.

The Cougars had three different players grab double-figure rebounds (Mika, Carlino and Austin) on the way to outrebounding North Texas 60-38.

"I think it’s something to build on. We’re coming off a great win against a great team in Utah State. It was a challenge for us tonight. We got off to a slow start. Not a lot of energy in the building. It was a challenge to get going, but it was definitely something to build on. I think a lot of guys played well. We just have to continue to build on it and build our confidence. I think things are going in the right direction."

On passing his dad:

"I might talk to him a little bit at the dinner table. I have bragging rights now."

"My grandpa had a big box of old tapes. He would record all of these games. That’s the only time I would ever watch my dad was at my grandpa’s house. My dad’s not the guy to be like 'come watch me.'  I heard lots of stories and knew he was a great player. I wouldn’t be the player I am without him."

Nate Austin

"I think in the first half we didn’t play as well as we wanted to. We got out to a lot slower start than we wanted to. We tried to attack more in the second half, tried to get buckets in transition, tried to get buckets down low, and I think in the second half we were able to do that a lot better."

On Matt Carlino:
"I think in the first half especially, they shot a lot of threes and so there were a lot of long rebounds and so I think Matt did a good job cleaning up the rebounds when they were longer."

"Coming into the game, we knew they were very good, very well coached and a great team in transition. We knew we were going to have to keep them out of transition and keep them off the backboard and we didn't do a great job at that. I knew they were going to stall us and I knew we were going to have to do a good job of attacking their zone. Transition - that was the game. They outscored us 20-2 in the first and and then in the second half they came out and just punched us in the mouth. We didn't do a great job of recovering and we didn't do a good job of getting stops early. I give coach Rose and his group credit, they have a really good team. Even though they are young, I think they play hard, they execute and they just out-toughed us tonight."

Was keeping up with BYU's pace part of the game plan tonight?
"We wanted to attack them because we wanted to score early in transition. If we didn't score early, we wanted to work the ball around and get some good shots and I don't think we did a good job of that. The zone slowed us down. They went to their zone and we were kind of stagnant and didn't have great ball movement or great body movement and we had a tough time making shots. But I give them credit, it was their defense, their offense, their transition and they did a great job against us defensively."

On the trouble getting to the game and the atmosphere:
"That's part of it. We got here a little late but that's no excuse for the way we played tonight. We're not going to make any excuses. They just came out and executed and they out-coached us and out-played us tonight. This is a great environment even though the snow kept some of the fans away, but it's a great place to play and I always enjoy coming down here when I was at New Mexico."
