BYU vs. Wichita State Box Score

Player Notes

Tyler Haws

Tyler Haws scored all four of his first half points from the free throw line. He made his first field goal with 18:53 left in the second half and finished with 17 points. He was 11 of 11 from the free throw line making Tuesday night's game the sixth time he has been perfect from the line while hitting 10 or more free throws which is a BYU record.

Haws failed to score 20 points for the first time in his last 11 games. It also snaps his streak to start the season of four games.

Haws did pass Alan Taylor to take over the 22nd spot in career scoring. He finished the game one point behind Dick Nemelka for 21st.

Haws also passed Travis Hansen for 16th in career free throws made with his first points of the night with 2:34 left in the first half and passed Randy Reid for 15th with his 10th free throw of the night with 2:52 in the second half.

Matt Carlino

Matt Carlino scored 20 points or more for the 12th time in his career. Tuesday night's game was the first time BYU lost when Carlino scored 20 or more.

Carlino scored exactly half of BYU's 36 first half points. It was a season high for first half scoring, eclipsing his 12 points from Monday night against Texas.

Carlino made his first three 3-pointers against Wichita State after making his first four 3-pointers on Monday night against Texas. He finished with four 3-point field goals to move into 14th place all-time behind Austin Ainge passing Jimmy Balderson and Nathan Call in the process. Carlino also passed Andy Toolson for ninth all-time in 3-point field goal attempts.

Kyle Collinsworth

Kyle Collinsworth grabbed double digit rebounds for the first time since Mount St. Mary's and set a season high with 11 boards. He finished with six points, failing to reach double digits for the first time this season. He also totaled two assists and two steals.

Eric Mika

Eric Mika scored in double figures for the sixth straight game.

Frank Bartley IV

Frank Bartley IV played almost three times as long as anyone else who came off the bench totaling 20 minutes. He finished with seven points and three rebounds.

Nate Austin

Nate Austin grabbed 12 rebounds to record double digit rebounds for the third time in his last four games. He was ejected after a flagrant 2 with 45.3 seconds left and finished with 12 boards and two blocks.

Quotes

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"We were close and got a couple breakouts and got to the rim and could have scored in transition and take the lead."

"Field goals in the second half for us were really tough to come by. Give a lot of credit to Wichita State. It's a very good defensive team. We caused them some real issues with our defense, but in the end it came down to a couple plays. (Fred) Van Vleet didn't hit many threes, but the ones he did were big and Baker the same way."

"You kind of chalk it up to we've got to be better. The same feeling we had last night of being able to execute late and get a big win is how we feel on the other end tonight, deflated, because the game was right there late to win and we were a few plays short."

"There were a lot of misses in this game. It was just a few plays here or there, maybe chalk it up to back to back nights, with a little bit of fatigue. I think Wichita State's depth was an issue. They played a couple more guys a couple more minutes, but I like our team. I like our guys. I just wish we could have made a few more plays late in the game."

"They made it really hard for us to do what we like to do, which is really move that ball and flip it side to side and get it in the post and get it back out. They challenged every pass."

"These are hard games for us to win when we're not shooting the ball well. I was really proud of the guys for how they hung in there in a tough situation. Sometimes when you don't score you can see it on the guys faces as far as the effort they give on the defensive end and we didn't really see a lot of that tonight. These guys hung in there and fought and we just came up a few points short."

Anson Winder

"We were right there with them. I think we battled for 37 minutes and it was a close game. Coach told us let's try and keep the crowd out of it because this is like a home game for them and we tried our best. We battled, but towards the end they made some big plays."

"Their defensive pressure is one of the best. I think that's why they're so good. They pressure the ball and make you turn it over and take tough shots. That kind of gets their offense going. They make tough plays at the end. They hit big shots when it's time to make big shots"

Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall

"That's a very tough ball game against a very, very good basketball team. They'll be in the NCAA tournament barring something very unforeseen."

"I was happy that we could come out with a win and a championship here in Kansas City and when you hold a team like that to 26 points (in the second half) it's a minor miracle."

"Matt Carlino was on fire. He came out and was making everything. You don't know what happens other than the defense has to get a little credit. All of a sudden he's not a bad shooter, he just wasn't making the shots. It's defense. It's just these guys are gritty enough."
