Player Notes

Haws scored 19 of BYU's last 21 points, taking the Cougars from down five to up four. Haws outscored Texas by seven in the final 8:50. Haws was the last Cougar to reach double figures in scoring, but still led the team in points with 25.

Haws made seven free throws to pass Jeff Chatman and his father Marty Haws for 17th all-time on the free throws made list. He now trails Travis Hansen by two for 16th.

Haws scored 20 points for the 10th consecutive game dating back to last year. It was his fourth straight game with 20 points to start this season. The 20-point game also moved him into a tie for eighth place all-time for most career 20-point games with Fred Roberts.

Haws trails Alan Taylor by three points for 22nd all-time on the BYU career scoring list.

Matt Carlino

Matt Carlino scored 20 or more points for the 11th time in his career. Each time Carlino has scored 20 or more points BYU has won. He made five 3-pointers which ties a career high. He last made five against Baylor in the final game of last season.

His five 3-pointers also moved him ahead of Todd Christensen for 16th all-time in 3-pointers made. Carlino moved into 10th all-time in 3-point attempts with seven, passing Terrell Lyday.

Carlino's six assists also moved him into 13th all-time passing Michael Smith.

Eric Mika

Eric Mika tied a career high for first half points with 12 before foul trouble derailed his second half production. He picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half. Mika finished with at least one of everything totaling 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

Frank Bartley IV

Bartley also tied a career high for first half scoring with 10 points and set a career high with three 3-pointers. He also had one of everything, totaling 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Bartley did most of his damage in the first half, but also played a career-high 26 minutes.

Nate Austin

Nate Austin's double digit rebound streak ended as he pulled down six boards on Monday night. He finished with two points, six rebounds, a block and an assist against Texas.

Kyle Collinsworth

Kyle Collinsworth finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a steal. He stayed in the game after picking up his fourth foul with five minutes remaining in the second half.

Team Notes

BYU is now 42-30 against current Big 12 teams.

The Cougars are now 10-4 when the game is broadcast on ESPNU.

Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika started together for the fourth time this season. BYU is 3-1 on the season with this starting lineup.

BYU made its first six 3-point shots. The Cougars didn't miss a 3-pointer for the first nine minutes of the game. The Cougars ended shooting 83 percent from behind the arc, double their percentage from inside the arc.

Texas grabbed twice as many offensive rebounds as BYU, while the Cougars grabbed more defensive rebounds. The Longhorns outrebounded BYU 47-40 on the night.

BYU head coach Dave Rose

"We had a disappointing loss the other night, it basically came to execution late in the game. We had two things to do tonight to win, we needed urgency throughout the game to not make it a losing streak. The second thing was we were going to have to execute late in the game. The guys were just really good down the stretch. We got out rebounded and at times it looked like they were manhandling us, but we made shots to stay in the game and then when it was time to win the game we were really good on both ends I thought."

On Tyler's second half

"It was a great second half of the second half for Tyler. A lot of it was he got to the free throw line, Ty's one of the best we've ever had of playing the next play and not playing the last play."

"The key for Ty is just to be confident and continue to believe the next one is the play that is going to work. I knew that he knew that the clock was running down and if he could find the space he could make that shot."

"When he is in that little groove that he was in at the end… He's one of those guys who kind of lives for that moment. That's what he wants. He got some space and buried that thing."

On playing a lot of zone defense

"We went into this game thinking we'd play a majority of zone… I just felt like it gave us a chance to neutralize some of the things that they're really, really good at. We wanted them to beat us from the outside and if we could rebound in the zone I felt like we could stay in it. The guys were really good in the last six or seven minutes. I think we played just enough defense to get a big win here."

Frank Bartley IV

"It was fun. I'm just playing with a lot of confidence right now. Coach trusts me to get in the game and make plays. I just came in and we were lacking effort. I wanted to come off the bench and I wanted to provide that spark for us. I came in knocking down shots and got us in a groove."

On rebounding from Iowa State loss

"That loss hurt, but we were the only team in this tournament that had a loss, so we know how that feels. We didn't want to go back in the locker room feeling the way we felt after the Iowa State game."

On Tyler Haws

Tyler Haws is a big time player. Everybody in the country knows that. When the lights come on, it's his time and he came back in the second half and provided for the team.

"I thought our big guys just dominated inside. Our guards have got to do a better job on the perimeter."

"We've got to take care of the details. I thought they did that coming down the stretch. They went to what they do best and went and played through Haws."
