Player Notes

Tyler Haws scored 20 points for his ninth-consecutive game dating back to last season. The streak puts him in sixth place all-time by himself. He now has three 20-point games to start his season, halfway to his second all-time mark of 20-point games to start a season that he set last year and four away from the all-time mark.

Eric Mika scored BYU's first 6 points, 8 of its first 11 and 10 of the first 15 points. He had the highest scoring first half of the season before leaving in the second half because of injury. His alley-oop dunk with 5:53 left in the first half punctuated a 19-6 run that gave the Cougars their largest lead at 12 points.

Nate Austin grabbed double digit rebounds in consecutive games for the first time in his career. He set his career high of 12 against Colorado Mesa on Saturday and set a new career high with 13 on his rebound of a one-and-one miss with 15 seconds left.

Matt Carlino finished one point shy of scoring 20. BYU has never lost when Carlino scores 20 or more points. He did finish with seven assists, well above his career average of 4.7. He also stole the ball four times, a season high.

Kyle Collinsworth finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists after finishing the first half with four of each.

Anson Winder returned to the bench after starting the previous two games. He scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists, as well as coming up with a big steal with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Team Notes

With Haws in the starting lineup, it was the third game head coach Dave Rose used Carlino, Collinsworth, Haws, Austin and Mika as starters. The Cougars are now 2-1 with that lineup to begin a game.

BYU had four players score in double figures, after having six score in double figures in each of the previous three games. Haws, Carlino, Mika and Collinsworth all scored more than 10 points for the Cougars. Mika, Carlino and Haws all reached 10 points or more in the first half. Mika reached double figures in just over eight minutes.

BYU outrebounded Iowa State 27 to 19 in the first half. Mika and Austin combined were only three rebounds away from outrebounding the entire Iowa State team in the first half. The Cyclones turned the tables in the second half outrebounding the Cougars 27 to 17 to climb back from a 12-point deficit and hold on for a two-point victory.

BYU and Iowa State each played nine players on Wednesday night, but three of the Cyclones' nine were disqualified, all in the final five minutes of the game.

Mika's alley-oop punctuated a 19-6 run for the Cougars' largest lead of the night at 12 points with 5:53 left in the first half. It took Iowa State 18 minutes to climb back and tie it. They took the lead a minute and half after that with 5:56 left in the game.

BYU is now 9-4 when its games are televised on ESPNU.

BYU made its first 3-pointer at 15:47 in the first half.

With less than five minutes to go BYU shot 7 of 9 from the free throw line, with Haws making all six of his attempts. Iowa State shot 2 of 5, missing the front end of a 1-and-1.

"I’d like to congratulate Fred and his team. I thought they played a great game. I thought it was a hard fought battle and both teams really gave a great effort. We had quite a few chances there at the end to make a few plays and win the game, but it just seemed like they were a little bit better in their execution late in the game."

"Our guys battled hard; they fought to the end. The resistance that Iowa State gave us was pretty strong. They were really tough around the rim. They were tough offensively and defensively. We gave up a couple of offensive rebounds late for scores that kind of broke our spirits a little bit, but our guys hung in there and we fought to the end but we were just a couple of plays short."

"We rebounded the ball really well for about 30 minutes, then it seemed like the tide changed and they got a couple of really timely offensive rebounds. Once we could get it off the board we could get out and run and found some baskets in transition, but they are so good, they are so well coached, and we are happy to walk out of here with a win."

He's a big time big time player and I thought we did as possibly could against him and he still scored a bunch of points.”
