BYU vs. Stanford Game Story

BYU vs. Stanford Box Score

Player Notes

Tyler Haws finished with 31 points against Stanford. It was the first time since March 19, 2013 against Washington that he has scored 30 points. It's his fourth career 30-point game which puts him tied for ninth all-time at BYU.

With 31 points in the game, Haws passed three people on the all-time scoring list at BYU. He jumped Gary Trost, Doug Richards and Jackson Emery for 23rd all-time at BYU. He is 101 points behind his father Marty Haws who is 20th all-time.

Haws has scored 20 or more points in eight straight games dating back to last year. The streak is tied for the sixth longest in BYU history. Haws also moved into a tie for ninth place with Ken Roberts with 31 career 20-point games.

Haws started last year with six straight 20-point games and has scored 20 in each of the first two games this season.

Matt Carlino scored 26 points and when he scores 20 points BYU hasn't lost going 10-0 in those games. Carlino scored 26 despite only playing five minutes in the first half.

Kyle Collinsworth set a career high in assists before the first half was over with eight. He also set career highs in free throws made with five and attempts with eight.

Collinsworth recorded one of everything in the first half with 12 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block. He finished with 14 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, three steals and a block.

True freshman Eric Mika scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds and two assists for his first double figure game of the season.

Anson Winder scored eight points in the first half, including two 3-pointers before finishing with 10 points in his first game this season in double figures.

Nate Austin scored the majority of his 12 points in the second half for his first double digit game of the season.

Three players just missed double-doubles. Austin and Haws were each two rebounds shy, while Collinsworth was one assist away from a double-double and three boards away from a triple-double.

Team Notes

The last time BYU scored 100 points was against Wyoming on March 5, 2011, and the last time the Cougars broke the century mark on the road was against Utah on Jan. 11, 2011.

The last time BYU scored 110 points was against Nevada on Dec. 22, 2009 in a 110-104 victory. Monday was the highest-scoring game since a 128-78 victory over Sacramento State on Feb. 25, 1993.

Monday night's game had a higher total score than any NCAA Division I contests last season, including overtime games. It was also the most points scored by a Dave Rose-coached team.

Six players (Haws, Carlino, Collinsworth, Mika, Austin and Winder) scored in double figures for the first time since Dec. 7, 2011 against Weber State.

Rose started the same lineup (Austin, Mika, Haws, Carlino, Collinsworth) as he did against Weber State in the home opener.

Six players had two fouls at the half, but only three players finished with four fouls (Austin, Collinsworth and Winder).

Quotes

BYU Head Coach: Dave Rose:

"That was a really entertaining game. Both teams played really well offensively. Usually early in the year your defense is way better than your offense, but that wasn't the case tonight. Both teams shot the ball well, the rebounding was even. It seemed like they dominated the boards in the first half; our guys did a decent job of trying to corral balls. Our plan of attack was scoring; that was the key to the game for us."

"RIght now we're trying to get used to seeing how the games are going to be called. We have a couple guards who can really get by guys. We've always been a kind of penetrate-and-kick, 3-point shooting team. We hit eight threes tonight."

BYU took a lot of shots within the first 10 seconds of possessions. Strategy?

"We want good shots – good open shots. It puts a lot of pressure on a team, keeps them on their heels. It also puts a lot of pressure on us to keep possessions, because we play so fast, but I think our guys are used to it."

How much confidence does a road win like this vs. a Pac-12 team give to the team?

"Over the years we've had a lot of good road wins, but I don't know about this early (in the season). We've got four or five good games like this in our non-conference schedule. Hopefully we can draw back to this win, and that our guys realize that they can be really good."

Guard Matt Carlino

On the run-and-gun contest tonight:

"That's just kind of our style. We're going to continue doing it and getting better at it. I didn't think we were getting tired at all. My legs were pretty fresh late in the game. "

What does this Pac-12 road win do for the team's confidence?

"We're already pretty confident. We expected to come in and win. We had a good game plan going in, we knew they were going press early. They did the press later, too, we kind of forgot about it for a second. Nothing they did surprised us."

"I don't think we've played a team with that much length. They were really long and super-athletic."

Tyler Haws:

"I thought it was a pretty physical game. Right until the end it was a battle. It was up and down, and they never went away. That's a good team."

On the run-and-gun:

"I love it. That fits our style of play really well when the opponent wants to run. Our guys rebounded really well, which helped us get into our transition game. I thought we shared the ball really well (23 assists). We found the open guy, and we took good shots, and we were able to knock a bunch down."

"(Center) Erik (Mika) is a beast inside. He showed some really good post moves. He does have good court vision to make some good passes."
