BYU hosts Alaska Anchorage in exhibition on Saturday

PROVO, Utah – In its final tuneup for the 2013-14 season, BYU basketball will host Alaska Anchorage in an exhibition game at the Marriott Center Saturday at 7 p.m. MDT. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

In their first exhibition, the Cougars defeated Colorado College 94-59 on Oct. 26 behind 23 points from junior guard Matt Carlino. Preseason All-American guard Tyler Haws scored 14 points and sophomore guard Kyle Collinsworth totaled a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Alaska Anchorage is an NCAA Division II program that competes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). The Seawolves finished last season with an overall record of 18-9 and an 11-7 mark in GNAC play. Four starters return from a year ago including the top two scorers in Kyle Fossman (14.8 ppg) and Teancum Stafford (14.2 ppg).

Fossman and Stafford were also the top 3-point shooters for the Seawolves last season as they combined to hit 113 of 263 (.430) from downtown. As a team, Alaska Anchorage shot .405 from three.

In the only previous meeting between the two schools, BYU and Alaska Anchorage played a regular season contest on Feb. 16, 1980 in the Marriott Center. The Cougars won 93-59 and were led by Devin Durrant’s 19 points and 11 boards while Danny Ainge chipped in 18 points.

BYU opens the 2013-14 regular season at home against Weber State Friday, Nov. 8. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
