WCC announces 2013-14 conference schedule
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced its 2013-14 men’s basketball conference schedule on Tuesday, featuring 10 teams for the first time in league history. The race for the WCC regular season crown will be contested over a 10-week span, and consist of a double round-robin format. Conference play is slated to begin on Saturday, December 28, and will culminate on March 1, 2014.
Anticipation for this season’s WCC conference battle is extremely high after a 2012-13 campaign that saw Gonzaga being ranked No. 1 in the nation, Saint Mary’s securing its sixth straight postseason berth, BYU reaching the NIT semifinals and Santa Clara winning the CBI postseason tournament. Additionally, those four teams each won 24 or more games, marking another first for the West Coast Conference.
The 2013-14 West Coast Conference men’s basketball schedule gets underway on Saturday, December 28, with eight teams in action. Defending West Coast Conference champ Gonzaga hosts CBI champion Santa Clara that day, while NIT semifinalist BYU plays at Loyola Marymount. Two days later, 2013 NCAA participant Saint Mary’s opens conference play at new WCC member Pacific.
A rematch of the 2013 WCC Championship game pits Saint Mary’s at Gonzaga on this season’s second week (Jan. 2), while San Diego visits BYU two days later. That same day (Jan. 4), Portland welcomes Saint Mary’s to the Chiles Center, and Pepperdine plays at San Francisco. Later in January, BYU visits San Francisco (Jan. 16), Gonzaga hosts BYU (Jan. 25) and Saint Mary’s plays at San Diego (Jan. 30).
In February, several key match-ups loom, including Saint Mary’s at BYU (Feb. 1), BYU at Saint Mary's (Feb. 15), Gonzaga at BYU (Feb. 20), and Saint Mary’s at Santa Clara (Feb. 22). The 2013-14 WCC regular season concludes on March 1 with all 10 teams in action, highlighted by BYU visiting San Diego and Gonzaga playing at Saint Mary’s.
The 2014 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships will take place from March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
