Competitive Day 5 of Fall Camp
PROVO, Utah - The BYU football team added shoulder pads to Day 5 of fall camp, leading to a competitive morning practice with extra conditioning drills.
Despite practicing in shoulder pads for the first time this fall, Tuesday marked another “no-hit” day. Position groups practiced together with the addition of one-on-one drills. Players moved to two-minute drills before working on special teams with kick-off coverage drills. Various sessions of skelly (7-on-7) were also included in practice.
The team started and ended practice with conditioning drills, a common theme during camp.
“I expected them to come in better condition and I’d like to maintain it and build it,” head coach Bronco Mendenhall said.
Team segment was cut short after a collision resulted in a conditioning “gauntlet”. Senior quarterback Riley Nelson was 3-3 before Mendenhall had a “teachable moment” with the team.
“They really want to play and are very competitive and they really want to be good or they need to learn how to practice,” Mendenhall said, adding that he liked what he saw today.
Camp continues Wednesday with two-a-days. Players will get their first “hit-day” in full pads during Thursday’s open practice at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
