PROVO, Utah – Earning a spot in the final poll for the fifth time in the last six seasons, BYU (10-3) received a No. 25 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll released late Monday night upon the conclusion of the college football season. The Cougars were listed just outside the final Associated Press poll at No. 26.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s teams have earned a final ranking in the Top 25 in five of the past six seasons, something accomplished only twice previously by the Cougars (five of six years from 1989-1994 and six of seven years from 1979-1985).

By doing so, BYU is one of only 11 programs nationally to be ranked in at least one of the two major polls during five of the last six seasons, joining Boise State, LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma, TCU, USC, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech. The Hokies are the only program to finish ranked all six seasons.  The Cougars are one of nine teams to be ranked at season’s end in the coaches’ poll in five of the past six seasons.

The Cougars have been ranked in the final polls in 20 seasons since first accomplishing the feat in 1974 in Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards’ second season. Mendenhall’s teams have done so in five of his seven seasons.

BYU started its current streak in Mendenhall’s second season in 2006 and has amassed a 60-18 record over that span to rank No. 10 overall in wins in the past six years.

Alabama (12-1) claimed the No. 1 ranking in both polls after its victory over LSU Monday night in the BCS National Championship game. The Tigers received the runner-up ranking with Oklahoma State, Oregon and Arkansas rounding out the top five in both polls.

BYU completed its first season as a football independent in 2011 with a 10-3 record and its fifth bowl victory in the last six seasons with a 24-21 victory over Tulsa in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.
