PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University and Washington State University will play a home-and-home football series beginning in 2012, it was announced today by both schools.

BYU will open the 2012 season at home versus WSU on Sept. 1. The BYU Cougars will then travel to Pullman, Wash., for a game in Martin Stadium in 2013.

“We’re excited to finalize this series with Washington State,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “It fits well with our philosophy of scheduling regional games with quality opponents. It also gives our fans in the Northwest another opportunity to see our football team play live.”

The two schools have met three times in the past. The first meeting came in the 1981 Holiday Bowl where Jim McMahon led BYU to a 38-36 victory in his final game as a Cougar. In addition the teams played a two-game series in 1989 and 1990. BYU lost to WSU, 46-41, in 1989 but won the following year, 50-36.

WSU has been a member of the Pac 12 or its predecessor since 1962 when it joined Cal, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington in the Big 6. The WSU Cougars have made 10 bowl appearances, including four trips to the Rose Bowl.

Additional details including broadcast plans, game times and ticket information will be released at a later date.
