PROVO, Utah - After one full week of practice, the BYU football team began its second week with another morning practice at the start of two-a-days.

The first practice session of the day featured a lot of work on formations and execution. Players particpated in other position drills and continued to work on various ways to improve.

During scrimmage work at the end of practice the defense was able to keep the offense out of the end zone in both blue zone and full team series.

"It was another good day of practice today," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "As always there will be days that swing one way or the other and one side or the other will respond."

Quarterback Jake Heaps took the first series and after a penalty on third down hit receiver Cody Hoffman for four yards. Hoffman was quickly tackled short of the first down. Special teams got some work in following the series with punter Riley Stephenson getting a punt down for 58 yards.

Moving into the blue zone the defense was stout again. On second down, running back Joshua Quezada was tackled behind the line of scrimmage by linebacker Kyle Van Noy to lose four yards. Heaps was then sacked by linebacker Jameson Frazier to force the offense to try for a 42-yard field goal.

Kicker Justin Sorensen made the 42-yarder then moved back and made a 47-yarder and then hit from 52 yards. He finished the day making 5-of-6 attempts, the longest being from 52 yards out.

Walk-on running back Malosi Te'o has decided to leave the team for personal reasons. Freshman running back Nate Carter will fill the open spot in fall camp.

The team will continue with two-a-days for part of this week, practicing again this afternoon. Tomorrow's 10:15 a.m. practice at the SAB practice field is the last session open to the public.
