PROVO, Utah -- The BYU football team enjoyed the last practice of the week under the spring sun and in front of a few hundred former BYU football alums and their families at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Friday.

In 11-on-11 drills, freshman wide receiver Ross Apo caught a 12-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps and senior JJ Di Luigi followed with a 15-yard run to get the offense going. But the defense came out on the next two plays, first with a pass knockdown by sophomore linebacker Spencer Hadley at the line of scrimmage.

Sophomore defensive back Chase Pendley had an interception fall in and then out of his hands on the next play before Heaps was forced to scramble for just a five-yard gain, stifling the drive.

Junior quarterback Riley Nelson completed three-straight passes to junior running back David Foote, junior wide receiver Matt Marshall and Foote again, advancing 24 yards down field. The defense again came up to prevent the first down, stuffing Di Luigi on a third-and-one.

Nelson went 4-for-4 for 31 yards while Heaps went 6-for-10 for 66 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown on a leap-and-grab by senior McKay Jacobson. Fellow quarterbacks James Lark added one completion for five yards and Jason Munns had one nine-yard pass.

On the final drive of the day, senior running back Bryan Kariya busted his way 23 yards to give the offense a jolt. Foote had a 13-yard rush as the offense continued to advance, finishing up the 80-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by Kariya.

Foote saw plenty of action on the day, rushing six times for 19 yards and catching four passes for 28 yards. Di Luigi went 57 yards on nine rushes, including two runs of over 15 yards while Kariya had 35 yards on three rushes with a touchdown.
