PROVO, Utah -- Play at all positions stepped up as the second week of spring practice began for the BYU football team on Monday as players seek to climb the depth chart.

"These guys are very competitive," said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall of his team. "I like the competition at all the positions."

After a number of spirited drills, the offense and defense faced off in a bit of 11-on-11. With quarterbacks rotating frequently, BYU ran multiple run plays, highlighted by a 16-yard run by sophomore Joshua Quezada.

Junior transfer defensive back Preston Hadley was given a whistle sack during the drill two plays before sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps hit senior wide receiver McKay Jacobson in stride off play action for a 59-yard touchdown.

After seven-on-seven drills, the team again split up for more 11-on-11. Junior quarterback Riley Nelson led the offense down the field on one drive, hooking up with sophomore wide receiver JD Falslev on plays of 26 and 27 yards.

Heaps took over on the ensuing drive, going 4-for-5. Heaps had a 10-yard pass to Falslev, a 30-yard hookup with sophomore Devin Mahina and an 11-yard completion to redshirt freshman Ross Apo.

In the final drive of the day, junior quarterback James Lark went 2-for-3 with a 15-yard pass to senior tight end Matt Edwards.

On defense, junior linebacker Connell Hess was credited with a sack and junior defensive back Robbie Buckner had a pass breakup on third down in the end zone.
