PROVO -- Brigham Young University and Idaho State University today announced the schools have scheduled a football game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011. The game finalizes the Cougars’ 2011 schedule — its first as a FBS independent.

“We needed one more home game to finalize our 2011 schedule and Idaho State had an opening. It turned out to be a good opportunity,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “I appreciate Jeff Tingey and his staff at ISU. They have been great to work with. We look forward to hosting the Bengals next year.”

Idaho State won the NCAA Division I-AA Championship in 1981, and is one of only 15 schools to win an FCS title. The Bengals have been playing football since 1902 and won the Big Sky championship in 2002. Idaho State is the Alma Mater of Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, ESPN analyst Merril Hoge and Minnesota Vikings’ All-Pro Jared Allen. Idaho State has produced 18 FCS All-Americans since 2000.

BYU and Idaho State have met just three times in football, the first being a 32-0 BYU victory in Pocatello, Idaho, on Nov. 4, 1932. The second game was also played in Idaho, with BYU winning, 14-13, on Sept 16, 1950. The two schools opened the following football season at BYU on Sept. 14, 1951. The Cougars won that contest 27-7.

The Cougars began playing football in 1922. In 86 seasons, BYU has captured 23 conference titles and won the 1984 National Championship. The Cougars have 510 all-time wins and have appeared in 28 bowl games.

Additional details including broadcast plans, game time and ticket information will be released at a later date.
