BYU, Ole Miss Agree to 2011 Football Game

PROVO -- Brigham Young University and Ole Miss today announced the schools have agreed to open the 2011 football season at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss., on Sept. 3, 2011.

Originally Boise State and Ole Miss were scheduled to play in Oxford, Miss., on that date. When the two schools agreed to move the game to the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, it left an opening in the Ole Miss schedule.

“Both schools needed a game and it turned out to be a good opportunity,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “We knew it would be a challenge to fill the 2011 football schedule after announcing we were going independent just a few months ago. We are fortunate to schedule a quality SEC opponent with a long, storied tradition like Ole Miss.”

Ole Miss began playing football in 1893. Throughout its 118-year football history the Rebels have won three national championships and six Southeastern Conference titles. The Rebels have 619 all-time victories and have appeared in 33 bowl games.

BYU and Ole Miss have never played in football. The Cougars are 1-3 in games versus SEC opponents (Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi State) and 2-2 in games versus schools from Mississippi (Southern Miss, Mississippi State).

The Cougars began playing football in 1922. In 86 seasons, BYU has captured 23 conference titles and won the 1984 National Championship. The Cougars have 510 all-time wins and have appeared in 28 bowl games.
