PROVO -- With fall camp winding down, emotions were high during BYU football practice on Monday.

Besides the usual drills, the Cougars also practice third-down conversions, with both the offensive and defensive units competing with renewed energy coming off of the weekend.

“We continue to get better,” said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall. “The more we go against each other the more it gets heated.”

During 11-on-11 drills, sophomore defensive lineman Eathyn Manumaleuna forced a three-and-out with a sack on junior quarterback Riley Nelson.

On the ensuing possession, freshman quarterback Jake Heaps went 3-of-3, including a pass of 27 yards to sophomore Rhen Brown on third down to keep the drive alive.

Five plays later, freshman running back Joshua Quezada scored from two yards out for the touchdown.

After completing another short drive, Heaps finished 7-of-7 with 62 yards.

Nelson, who went 4-of-6 for 40 yards through the air and had four rushes and 21 yards on the ground, led the final possession, setting up a 42-yard field goal conversion by sophomore Riley Stephenson.

Nelson hit Brown for 15 yards and junior tight end Mathew Edwards for 16 yards on back-to-back plays, then ran for a gain of nine yards to get within field goal range.

Brown continues to have a solid camp, catching two passes for 42 yards to lead all receivers.

Fall camp will continue through Wednesday, ending with a scrimmage, before preparation for Washington starting Thursday. All practices are closed to the public.
