PROVO -- Both the offense and defense excelled as BYU football continued preparations for the 2010 season on the fourth day of fall camp Wednesday morning.

“Today was probably the best combination of enthusiasm on both sides,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “It swung back and forth and enthusiasm came with execution too.”

During blue zone drills the offense started off hot with freshman quarterback Jake Heaps connecting with running back Zed Mendenhall for a 1-yard touchdown pass. Junior quarterback Riley Nelson followed with a quick 20-yard strike to freshman receiver Ross Apo for another touchdown.

The defense responded by stopping the next two drives and forcing field goal attempts. Tries from 30 yards and 48 yards were both missed.

Nelson got the first snaps of 11-on-11 drills but failed to move the ball, going three and out. Sophomore quarterback James Lark used his legs to pick up 17 yards on two rushes and then found wide receiver Rhen Brown for a 32-yard pass, setting up a seven-yard touchdown run by sophomore David Foote.

Heaps engineered another successful drive for the offense going 4-for-6 on the series for 45 yards. Bryan Kariya capped off the drive with a 15-yard rushing touchdown.

The defense had the last shining moment, however, first blocking a PAT attempt and then picking up a sack to end practice. Nelson finished the day 2-of-4 passing for 25 yards and one touchdown. Heaps was 6-of-11 for 61 yards with one touchdown and Lark ended up 4-of-6 for 48 yards and two rushes for 17 yards.

Missing from practice was quarterback Jason Munns, defensive lineman Tayo Fabuluje and a few others who had study sessions for upcoming finals.

BYU will have its first practice in full pads on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. The first of four public practices take place on Friday with both the 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. sessions open to the public.
