PROVO -- Excitement for the 2010 campaign continued Tuesday as the Cougar offense shined on day three of fall camp.

“I was impressed with our offense today,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “Regardless of who was in there playing together they looked a little more confident, a little more certain and a little more assignment-sound. It was good to see.”

Blue zone drills commenced with junior quarterback Riley Nelson connecting with freshman running back Joshua Quezada for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Jake Heaps followed Nelson with a pair of touchdown passes, one to junior wide receiver McKay Jacobsen, and the other to fellow freshman Ross Apo, an 18-yard fade in the corner of the end zone. Leading the final series, sophomore quarterback James Lark handed off to junior running back Bryan Kariya at the three-yard line for a touchdown.

The offense continued to shine in 11-on-11 drills, driving into the blue zone on 3-of-4 series. Senior wide receiver BJ Peterson caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Riley Nelson to cap off a 70-yard scoring drive. Heaps guided the offense 52 yards before he was intercepted at the 1-yard line by senior corner back Brian Logan.

Freshman quarterback Jason Munns led the last series of 11-on-11 drills, completing two passes on two attempts for 26 yards.

Nelson finished the day 4-of-6 passing for 63 yards and three touchdowns, while adding six rushes for 48 yards. Heaps was 10-for-11 for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cougars practice again Wednesday, with the first day of full pads on Thursday. The first of four public practices take place on Friday with both the 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. sessions open to the public.
