PROVO -- A blue-collar effort defined day two of fall camp for the BYU football team Monday, as September 4th awaits on the horizon.

“The atmosphere was really enthusiastic today,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “I think it’s because there are so many open spots that there is such a competitive spirit.”

After individual drills, the Cougars gathered for 11-on-11, third-down situational drills. Freshman quarterback Jake Heaps led the first drive, with junior Riley Nelson and freshman Jason Munns also getting snaps. Heaps went 6-for-9 with 47 yards passing during 11-on-11 work overall.

The Cougar offense relied mostly on an air attack with Nelson throwing 60-yard touchdown pass to junior running back JJ Di Luigi, who made three catches during team segments for 77 yards. Nelson finished the day with 139 passing yards, completing 10-of-17 attempts, while adding 17 ground yards on three carries.

However, it was the Cougar defense that shined during the second set of 11-on-11 drills. After Nelson engineered a 59-yard drive powered by three McKay Jacobsen catches for 47 yards, the defense was able to close the door inside the blue zone. Freshman linebacker Kyle Van Noy was credited with two sacks on the day.

“I’m impressed with the offensive line, our defense is playing hard and our receivers are playing well,” commented Mendenhall.

Freshman Manu Mulitalo was cleared and practiced Monday after NCAA Clearinghouse paperwork was finalized. Freshman running back Drew Phillips, who is awaiting the completion of the same paperwork, is expected to practice Tuesday.
