2010 BYU Football Schedule Announced
PROVO -- BYU’s 2010 football schedule was completed Monday with the release of the Mountain West Conference schedule. Broadcast plans were also announced for 10 of BYU’s 12 games with all announced telecasts scheduled for broadcast in high definition in 2010.
The Cougars open the season against Pac-10 foe Washington—coached by former BYU All-American quarterback Steve Sarkisian—on Sept. 4 in Provo. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. MT on CBS C-HD. BYU opens MWC action the next week at Air Force, playing the Falcons in a 2 p.m. start on Sept. 11. The game will be televised on VERSUS HD.
BYU makes its first-ever trip to Tallahassee to face the Florida State Seminoles of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sept. 18. The following week BYU returns home to host the Nevada Wolf Pack on Sept. 25 in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars play another Western Athletic Conference opponent the next week when they travel to Logan for an Oct. 1 matchup with in-state rival Utah State on the Aggies’ home turf. Game times for the final three nonconference games and television plans for the Florida State and Nevada games have not yet been determined. The Utah State game will be televised on either ESPN HD or ESPN2 HD.
The Cougars return to conference play on Oct. 9 when they host San Diego State in a 4 p.m. MT start on The Mtn. HD before traveling to face reigning MWC Champion TCU on Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. CT in a VERSUS HD telecast. The next three games all kick off at noon MT with BYU hosting Wyoming on Oct. 23 and UNLV on Nov. 6 sandwiched around its bye week, followed by a trip to Fort Collins to meet Colorado State on Nov. 13. All three games will be broadcast on The Mtn. HD.
The Cougars conclude the regular season with a Nov. 20 contest in Provo against New Mexico and a Nov. 27 date with Utah in Salt Lake City. Game time for the Lobos and Cougars is 4 p.m. MT, while the Cougars and Utes will kick at 1:30 p.m. The Mtn. HD will broadcast both games with the BYU-Utah game also being simulcast via CBS C-HD.
In terms of nonconference play, BYU last faced Washington in 2008, earning a 28-27 victory in Seattle. The Cougars escaped a potential overtime period when BYU blocked the Huskies’ extra-point attempt following a UW touchdown with just two seconds remaining in the game. BYU has a chance to even the overall series that Washington leads 4-3 since the first meeting in 1985. The Cougars won the last contest in Provo, 35-28, in 1999.
Florida State owns a 3-0 advantage over the Cougars and delivered one of only two BYU losses last year when the Cougars finished ranked No. 12 in the nation with an 11-2 record. The Seminoles won the first two games of the series with a 44-28 win at the 1991 Pigskin Classic in Anaheim, Calif., and a 29-3 victory in the 2000 Pigskin Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Cougars and Wolf Pack meet for the eighth time since their inaugural matchup in 1929. BYU owns the advantage with a 4-1-2 record in the series, but Nevada claimed its lone victory against the Cougars, 31-28, in the last meeting in Reno in 2002. The last contest in Provo between the two schools was a 52-7 BYU triumph in 2001.
BYU and Utah State meet in 2010 for the 80th time in the long-running series. After their 35-17 win in Provo last year, the Cougars own a 43-33-3 overall advantage. The last matchup in Logan was a 34-14 BYU victory in 2008.
In 2010 the Cougars will play 11 of 12 games on a Saturday with the lone exception being a Friday night contest with Utah State on Oct. 1. BYU will appear on VERSUS and CBS College Sports Network twice apiece with six contests being broadcast on The Mtn., including a simulcast with CBS C of the BYU-Utah game. The Cougars will also appear on the ESPN Networks when it faces Utah State. Broadcast plans for two games are yet to be announced.
VERSUS and the CBS College Sports Network are widely available on cable systems across the country and via satellite on DIRECTV (VERSUS-Channel 603/CBS C-Channel 613). Dish Network carries VERSUS on Channel 151 and CBS C on Channel 152) and has not yet added The Mtn. to its lineup. The Mtn. is carried nationally by DIRECTV (Channel 616) and on numerous cable operators representing over 200 municipalities in nine states.
