PROVO -- BYU Athletics today released its 2010 nonconference football schedule featuring games against Washington, Florida State, Nevada and Utah State.

The Cougars open the season against Pac-10 foe Washington—coached by former BYU All-American quarterback Steve Sarkisian—on Sept. 4 in Provo. BYU makes its first-ever trip to Tallahassee to face the Florida State Seminoles of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sept. 18. The following week BYU returns home to host the Nevada Wolf Pack on Sept. 25 in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars play another Western Athletic Conference opponent the next week when they travel to Logan for an Oct. 1 matchup with in-state rival Utah State on the Aggies’ home turf.

BYU last faced Washington in 2008, earning a 28-27 victory in Seattle. The Cougars escaped a potential overtime period when BYU blocked the Huskies’ extra-point attempt following a UW touchdown with just two seconds remaining in the game. BYU has a chance to even the overall series that Washington leads 4-3 since the first meeting in 1985. The Cougars won the last contest in Provo, 35-28, in 1999.

Florida State owns a 3-0 advantage over the Cougars and delivered one of only two BYU losses last year when the Cougars finished ranked No. 12 in the nation with an 11-2 record. The Seminoles won the first two games of the series with a 44-28 win at the 1991 Pigskin Classic in Anaheim, Calif., and a 29-3 victory in the 2000 Pigskin Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Cougars and Wolf Pack meet for the eighth time since their inaugural matchup in 1929. BYU owns the advantage with a 4-1-2 record in the series, but Nevada claimed its lone victory against the Cougars, 31-28, in the last meeting in Reno in 2002. The last contest in Provo between the two schools was a 52-7 BYU triumph in 2001.

BYU and Utah State meet in 2010 for the 80th time in the long-running series. After their 35-17 win in Provo last year, the Cougars own a 43-33-3 overall advantage. The last matchup in Logan was a 34-14 BYU victory in 2008.

The 2010 Mountain West Conference schedule has not yet been announced. Game times and television plans will be announced at a later date.
