PROVO -- BYU seniors Jan Jorgensen and Matt Bauman have been named to the 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List consisting of 42 of the nation’s top defensive players who make an impact both on and off the playing field. The list was announced this week at a luncheon hosted by Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott.

BYU is one of four schools to have two players recognized on the list along with Alabama, Georgia and UCLA. In all, players from 38 different schools made the list. TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes joins Jorgensen and Bauman representing the Mountain West Conference among the initial candidates.

A quarterfinalist for the award last year, Jorgensen is one of 14 repeat nominees in 2009, the most in the six years of the award. A defensive end, Jorgensen was an ARA Sportsmanship Award finalist last year and enters his final season as the MWC's career sacks leader. The Helper, Utah, native has earned All-MWC First Team honors each of the past two seasons.

Bauman is one of 28 newcomers to make the list in 2009. The Salt Lake City native started all 13 games for BYU in 2008 and was the team’s top tackler with 108 takedowns. Bauman was also one of three Cougars to earn the distinction of being a first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American in 2008.

Named after Hall of Famer Lott, The Lott Trophy is awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The Lott Trophy is the only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player.

Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

David Pollack of Georgia won the initial Lott Trophy in 2004. DeMeco Ryans of Alabama won the award in 2005, followed by Daymeion Hughes of Cal in 2006, Glenn Dorsey of LSU in 2007 and James Laurinaitis of Ohio State in 2008. Georgia, Alabama, Cal, LSU and Ohio State have each received $25,000 for their general scholarship funds. In five years, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation has donated more than $650,000 to various charities, including the five universities.

Voters for the award include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, the Board of Directors of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The IMPACT Foundation Board of Advisors comprised of many retired NFL players and the Legends Coaches, a distinguished group of former head college coaches.

The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif. on Dec. 13, 2009.
