PROVO -- Defensive back Kellen Fowler has been named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship based on his academic and athletic accomplishments at BYU. The scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who plan on exploring postgraduate study at a part-time or full-time university or professional school.

“There isn’t a more deserving student-athlete in the entire country of this honor than Kellen Fowler,” said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall. “His intelligence, work ethic and dedication goes unmatched. He will have tremendous success in the future and we’re very proud of him.”

Graduating in finance, Fowler has been accepted to attend law school at the University of Virginia this fall. He was one of three Cougars recognized as members of the 2008 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team.

A three-time Academic All-Mountain West Conferece and MWC Scholar Athlete honoree, the safety from Kaysville, Utah, also started each game for the Cougars in 2008. He finished the season third on the team in tackles with 88, recorded two pass breakups, recovered a fumble in BYU's season-opener against Northern Iowa and was credited with a career-high 10 tackles against New Mexico.

Fowler is one of 15 football players and 29 fall sport student-athletes across the country to receive the award and is the lone representative from the MWC.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually—87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
