Wyoming Upsets BYU as Goal Posts are Torn Down

Postgame Notes

LARAMIE -- Wyoming upset No. 12 BYU, 31-17, Saturday night using a gimmick spread offense and a swarming blitz which caused several of the 26,038 fans to tear down the goal posts.

With Coach Dana Dimel in the press box like counterparts from Wisconsin and Georgia Tech, the Cowboys, 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference, dropped previously unbeaten BYU in league play. The loss stopped a six-game BYU winning streak and puts the Cougars at 8-2 overall, but still in control of their first-place destiny at 5-1.

"We lost some scoring opportunities that came back to haunt us," said BYU wide receiver Margin Hooks. Hooks had seven catches for 143 yards and a second-quarter touchdown against the Pokes.

BYU lost a fumble on the one-yard-line in the first quarter, threw an interception on the goal line in the second quarter, and missed a TD opportunity in the third quarter when a pass bounced off a wide-open receiver in the endzone.

"We killed ourselves offensively," said BYU Coach LaVell Edwards. "The turnovers were big when they happened. Generally we've been able to make those kind of plays. We were out of sync all night long and came out flat. We didn't execute and their execution was good all night long from start to finish."

Wyoming opened the scoring on a two-play drive that culminated in a 14 yard pass from Jay Stoner to Wendell Montgomery with 12:18 left in the first quarter.

The Cougars looked to tie the score when linebacker Justin Ena recovered a fumble on the Wyoming 42-yard-line off Jesse Sowards' punt on the next drive. Ben Horton made a nice 17-yard catch as BYU penetrated the Cowboy redzone, but three plays later the first of several costly BYU fumbles happened on the one-yard-line.

Linebacker Rob Morris and defensive end Byron Frisch had back-to-back sacks to force Wyoming into a 49-yard field goal attempt that was wide left. On UW's next offensive series, BYU defensive lineman Chris Watkins picked up a fumble off an errant pitch at the Wyoming 49.

Three plays later under fire from Wyoming's defense, BYU quarterback Kevin Feterik lofted a pass intended for Hooks, but Robbie Duncan picked it off at the goal-line and returned it to the Wyoming eight.

On BYU's next offensive series offensive guard John Skiba left the game with a knee injury, fullback Kalani Sitake suffered a broken bone in his leg, and shortly thereafter reserve lineman Jason Scukanec suffered an ankle injury.

On the last full series of the first half Hooks caught a 20-yard TD strike, extending Feterik's string to 15 consecutive games throwing a touchdown pass.

Montgomery caught his second TD pass of the night with 10 seconds left in the first half on a 20-yard reception from a perfect corner toss which enabled Wyoming to take a 14-7 halftime lead.

Cowboy kicker Aaron Elling booted a 45-yard field goal with 10:51 in the third quarter to boost the martin to 17-7. Then BYU had a chance for its wide-open touchdown, but a dropped ball forced the Cougars to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Owen Pochman. It was Pochman's 14th consecutive field goal made.

Wyoming continued its scoring when Stoner hit Kofi Shuck on a 22-yard post-corner in the third quarter, then had Tim Beasley break through the Cougar line up the middle for a 14-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Feterik scored off a quarterback sneak with 4:47 left in the game, but BYU's on-side kick on the ensuing play was unsuccessful.

"It was hard to get a pass rush tonight," said BYU defensive end Setema Gali. "We are so used to three and out situations, but Wyoming kept marching off third downs. We were unable to get a stop."

The Pokes converted 10 of 16 third down situations, compared to 10 of 18 for BYU. The Cougars netted 362 yards passing, compared to UW's 302, but the Pokes had 173 yards rushing using handoffs to the motion man and wrap-around draws, compared to BYU's 29 yards on the ground. Beasley led all rushers with 82 yards and Montgomery had seven catches for 122 yards.

BYU was without the services of injured running back Luke Staley as the Cougars played in Laramie for the first time in seven years. Feterik was sacked five times for a minus 44 yards, but completed 30 of 46 passes.
