Cougars Prepare for Washington with Final Scrimmage

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU offensive attack was looking better than ever in an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday night, the team's last before taking on Washington next Thursday. Cougar quarterbacks combined for 21-37 passing, compiling 389 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.

Senior Kevin Feterik led the offense, finishing with a team-high nine completions in 13 attempts for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Matt Berry was impressive in limited action, connecting on three of four passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

Brett Engemann finished 4-8 for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Charlie Peterson was 4-7 for 46 yards and Brandon Doman ended up with 17 yards and a touchdown on 1-5 passing.

Junior Ben Horton, who led all receivers with four receptions for 54 yards and two touchdowns, is confident that the offense is ready to start the season. "The passing attack is gonna be electrifying," said Horton. "We've still got a week to go, but we're executing the team is coming along great."

Margin Hooks also had an impressive showing, grabbing three passes for 83 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown. Freshman Chris Hale continued to surprise fans as he caught a 73-yard touchdown from Berry.

Despite the success of the passing attack during the scrimmage, Cougar Head Coach LaVell Edwards was more excited about the outstanding performance of BYU's freshman running backs Luke Staley and Naufahu Tahi.

The duo formed an impressive rushing tandem, as Tahi scored two touchdowns and ran for 25 yards in 10 attempts while Staley punched in another TD, running for 71 yards in only 10 attempts.

"It was good to see those young backs in action tonight," said Edwards. "They will certainly see playing time, no question about that. I'm feeling good about our progress. Now we just have to zero in on Washington."

Although injuries have hampered the Cougars throughout fall practices, no one was hurt during Tuesday's scrimmage and most of the injured players will be ready to play before the first game next week.

The Cougars open the season against the Washington Huskies Thursday, September 9 at 6 p.m. in Cougar Stadium.
