2002 Blue/White Scrimmage Recap

PROVO -- The Cougars wrapped up the spring season with the annual Blue/White Scrimmage at Lavell Edward's Stadium Saturday in front of 5,118 fans.

"This scrimmage offers a chance for the fans to get to know the new faces on the team," BYU head coach Gary Crowton said. "We have a lot of high expectations for our upcoming season."

One of the biggest questions for the team this year will be at the quarterback position. The projected starter, junior Brett Engemann, finished the game 19-28 for 177 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. Sophomore Todd Mortensen threw 4-10 for 33 yards while Lance Pendleton went 4-10 for 27 yards with two interceptions. Freshman Matt Berry finished 3-11 for 18 yards while throwing two interceptions.

"My arm felt 100 percent today," Engemann said. "I'm trying not to force things and just take things one play at a time."

The running game looked solid hoping to fill the gap left by the loss of Luke Staley. Sophomore Marcus Whalen finished the game with a team-high 11 carries for 58 yards. Logan Deans rushed seven times for 45 yards and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. Jared Harper ran the ball 10 times for a team-high 75 yards.

"I'm a little stronger than I was before," Whalen aid. "I need to work on my speed and timing with the blocks."

Tight end Spencer Nead led the receiving crew with five catches for 40 yards. Senior Reno Mahe made two catches for 16 yards. Gabriel Reid and David Christensen were on the receiving end of Engemann's two TD tosses.

The defense scored two touchdowns of their own with Colby Bockwoldt returning an interception for 60 yards and Bill Wright returning one with only a minute left for 40 yards. Linebacker Paul Walkenhorst finished with four tackles and a sack and lineman John Denney finished with two sacks and four tackles.

"The defense played very well today," Crowton said.

The Cougars open the 2002 season at home Aug. 29 against Syracuse.
