Hill named to watch list for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

TYLER, Texas — BYU sophomore receiver Keanu Hill was named to the 10th annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, announced Tuesday at the Tyler Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler 15th Annual East Texas Kick-off Luncheon.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in college football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community involvement and the tenacity to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. To be considered, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria — born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school, played at a Texas-based junior college and/or Texas-based four-year college. 

A native of Bedford, Texas, Keanu Hill played in all 13 games as a Covid freshman at BYU in 2021. The Trinity High School (Euless, Texas) graduate had 18 catches for 343 yards and two touchdowns. He recorded a career-high four catches for 92 yards versus Idaho State and had an additional four receptions for 72 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown in BYU’s 35-31 win at USC.

Hill had at least one reception in eight games during the 2021 season including a key 33-yard catch to set up a touchdown in BYU’s 26-17 win over No. 21 Utah. On Nov. 6, versus Idaho State, he became the first BYU football player since 2004 to block and recover a punt for a touchdown. In 24 games as a Cougar, Hill has 25 receptions for 453 yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging 18.1 yards per catch. 

The 2022 watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists in November and then five finalists in December. The winner will be selected by a panel of broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous award winners. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award winner will be announced in January and will receive the trophy sculptured by noted artist Ken Bjorge.
