Allgeier named Sporting News Second-Team All-American
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — BYU running back Tyler Allgeier was named a second-team All-American today by The Sporting News.
The sophomore from Fontana, California—who was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist—is tied for the national lead in rushing touchdowns with 20 and is eighth in rushing yards with 1,409. He is third in total touchdowns and No. 6 in rushing yards per game with 117.4.
In week nine of the 2021 season, Allgeier was named Capital One Orange Bowl Player of the Week and honorable mention College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Week for his 266-yard, five-touchdown performance, leading nationally ranked BYU to a 66-49 win over Virginia. His 266 yards were the third-highest single-game total in BYU history.
During the 2021 regular season, Allgeier was named Independent Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness three times and earned a helmet sticker from ESPN College Football Final host Matt Barrie following the Virginia game. He was also named to Kirk Herbstreit’s players of the week for his 218-yard, three-touchdown performance in leading BYU to a 34-20 win over MWC champion Utah State in week five of the season.
Allgeier is currently No. 7 all-time at BYU in career rushing with 2,707 yards. He is No. 1 in career yards per carry with 6.73 and fifth in career rushing touchdowns with 33. His 1,409 rushing yards in 2021 is the second-highest single-season rushing total in BYU history behind 2001 Doak Walker Award winner Luke Staley who had 1,582 that season. His season average of 7.53 yards per carry, 20 rushing touchdowns and 249 rushing attempts are also second all-time at BYU among single-season achievements behind Staley.
In addition to being named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, Allgeier was on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Paul Hornung Award and the CFPA National Performer of the Year. In 2020, he finished No. 8 nationally with 1,130 rushing yards and was No. 4 in yards per carry at 7.53 for the No. 11-ranked Cougars.
