Empey named semi-finalist for the 2021 Rotary Lombardi Award
HOUSTON — BYU offensive linemen James Empey has been named one of 12 semi-finalists for the 2021 Rotary Lombardi Award by the Rotary Club of Houston.
Named after NFL Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi, the Rotary Lombardi Award recognizes offensive and defensive linemen, who in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplify Lombardi’s character and discipline.
A two-year team captain, Empey has started at center in all 39 games he’s played during his four-year BYU career. He was named a 2021 preseason All-American by both Phil Steele and Athlon Sports and was recognized on five preseason award watch lists. Empey has helped lead No. 19 BYU to a 5-1 record in 2021, including two wins over ranked teams.
In 2020, Empey helped captain a BYU offense that finished the season ranked top-10 in scoring (No. 4), total offense (No. 7), passing offense (No. 8) and most plays of 30 or more yards (No. 1) in 2020. The No. 11 ranked Cougars went 11-1 on the year and concede just 12 sacks over 12 games (No. 8).
Empey also exemplifies leadership off the field, highlighted by his work alongside head coach Kalani Sitake with the More to Life Foundation as well as service in the community.
Finalists for the Lombardi Award will be announced on Nov. 9, with the formal announcement of the 2021 recipient scheduled for Dec. 8 in Houston.
Notable previous Rotary Lombardi Award winners include Ndamukong Suh, Aaron Taylor, Julius Peppers, Terrell Suggs, Aaron Donald, and two-time winner Orlando Pace.
