Cougars are No. 18 in latest CFP rankings

PROVO, Utah — BYU (9-1) dropped to No. 18 in the College Football Playoff Rankings announced Tuesday after coming up just short of the goal line on the last play of the game in a 22-17 loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The Chanticleers (10-0) and Cougars traded places in the rankings, with CCU coming in at No. 13.

The top six teams stayed in place with Alabama (9-0) receiving the top rating again on Tuesday by the CFP Committee, followed by Notre Dame (10-0), Clemson (9-1), Ohio State (5-0), Texas A&M (7-1) and Florida (8-1). Iowa State (8-2) jumped two spots to No. 7 with Cincinnati (8-0) and Georgia (6-2) settling back to No. 8. and No. 9. The next three teams stayed the same with Miami (8-1), Oklahoma (7-2) and Indiana (6-1) ranked 10th through 12th, respectively. 

The Chanticleers made a five-place jump along with USC (4-0), now ranked No. 15 just behind Northwestern (5-1). Louisiana (9-1) made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving up six spots to No. 19 just behind BYU. Oklahoma State (6-3) had the biggest drop, falling seven places to No. 23. 

New to the rankings this week are Texas (6-3) at No. 20, Colorado (4-0) at No. 21, NC State (8-3) at No. 23 and Missouri (5-3) at No. 25. Wisconsin, Marshall, Washington and Oregon all dropped out of the rankings. 

BYU, ranked No. 14 (AP) and No. 16 (Coaches) in the two national polls, will host former Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State (4-3) this Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. MST.
