BYU named Athlon Sports Team of the Week
PROVO – The BYU football team was named the Athlon Sports College Football Team of the Week following its 55-3 win over Navy in the season opener.
Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes also earned Coordinator of the Week honors and linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi was the Defensive Player of the Week.
The Cougar offense, directed by Grimes, racked up 580 total yards, 28 first downs and 301 rushing yards. BYU scored points on 9 of 12 drives in the game, including seven touchdown drives. The Cougars' 55 points were tied for the second-most under head coach Kalani Sitake and were the most in a season-opener since 70 against Tulane in 2001.
Kaufusi recorded two sacks and five solo tackles against the Midshipmen. He was part of a BYU defense that allowed just 149 total yards to Navy, the Mids' lowest output since 2012. Kaufusi was also named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of Week.
