BYU leads Phil Steele Preseason Independent Team
BYU football earned 14 citations among 13 players named to the Phil Steele 2020 Preseason Independent Team.
The Cougars landed eight on the first team and six on the second team featuring selections from the seven independent schools, including Notre Dame, UConn, Army, UMass, Liberty and New Mexico State. BYU's 14 citations topped Notre Dame's 13 to lead all schools.
Tight end Matt Bushman, offensive linemen Brady Christensen and James Empey, along with receiver Gunner Romney earned recognition with the first team on offense, while Dax Milne was selected to the first team as a returner and second team on offense at wideout. Quarterback Zach Wilson was named to the second team and running back and kick returner Lopini Katoa was also selected as a returner on the second team.
On defense, linebackers Isaiah Kaufusi, Kavika Fonua and Chaz Ah You were named to the first team, while defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga and Chris Wilcox earned second-team honors. Kicker Jake Oldroyd was also a second-team honoree.
