Matt Bushman named to 2019 Walter Camp Award Watch List

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation named BYU tight end Matt Bushman as one of 40 players to watch for the 2019 Player of the Year award on Friday, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.

Bushman, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior from Arizona is one of just two tight ends on the list, joining Vanderbilt’s Jared Pinkney. Bushman is also a watch list honoree for the Mackey Award, awarded to the nation’s top tight end.

In 2018, Bushman led the Cougars with 29 receptions for 511 yards and two touchdowns. His 17.62 yards per reception led all FBS tight ends last season and ranked No. 29 among all receivers.

A freshman All-American in 2017, Bushman has 78 receptions, 1,031 yards and five touchdowns in his career of 26 games.

“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president Mario Coppola said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November.  The 2019 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12.  The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 53rd annual national awards banquet on Jan.18, 2020 in New Haven, Connecticut.
